classroom setting.The studied classes come from two small private universities, one in the mid-atlantic and theother in the west. At both institutions, the courses of interest are required junior-levelengineering classes that incorporate simulations into the classroom. The study began Fall 2015,and for that semester the class from the mid-atlantic university was chemical engineering courseon separations with a total of 29 students. The course from the western university was twosections of a required aerospace engineering class on orbital mechanics. These two sections hada total of 67 students which were split into sections of 33 and 34. , simulations refer to using software to solve problems where the real-life process isdifficult to recreate in a classroom.The studied classes are from two small private universities, one in the mid-atlantic and the otherin the west. Evaluation1.IntroductionThe Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in North America, stretching nearly 300 km long andpossessing a watershed spanning parts of six Mid-Atlantic States and more that 165,700 km3. Itis a vital resource to more than 16 million people that live in its watershed and beyond, providingfood, jobs, habitat, recreation, and other benefits. It is, however, a fragile resource madeespecially vulnerable to eutrophication (nutrient-enrichment) due to its long dendritic shorelineand the many human activities that are prevalent. These include high concentrations ofagricultural activities as well as several major population centers3, 10. wasfirst processed through R, an open-source statistical package, in which scripts of code werewritten to clean the large amount of data. Once data were cleaned and processed, we were able toconduct statistical analyses that addressed the two research questions.The study population (post-data cleaning) consists of 876 students in freshman engineering fromFall 2013 at a large, Mid-Atlantic research university. Students who opted-out of having theirdata part of the on-going research project were removed from the data set. diversity At first, the assessment showed a disproportionate number of projects were located inurban areas and connected to specific school districts and city administrations, see Figure 2.There were only seven projects that focused on rural school districts, while 21 projects wereconnected to urban school districts. The projects grouped as both urban and rural were all state-wide initiatives where the project outcomes affected both large cities and rural regions. Taken atface value, this depicts a higher concentration of projects located in urban areas where internetconnectivity is generally more accessible. The financial geography shows that these projectstarget major US cities with concentrations in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, as well
