Abstract

The undergraduate design Capstone “Spark of Imagination” team is tasked with designing experiences within the College of Engineering by the client. The client's goal for these experiences is to elevate their tours to prospective students by either directly highlighting the college or the student themselves. The client additionally desires to showcase what different majors within the college are able to achieve while attending X University within said tours. The team met with the client multiple times to discuss ideas that reflected their goals and determined what was achievable with the time constraint and budget allotted for an undergraduate capstone project. The team picked three concepts which include: adding effects to the entrance of the Dean’s Office, a wall highlighting the history of X University, and a central decorative piece of X University with a storyline designed to spark imagination in the students touring and entertain others along the tour. To achieve this goal as a team, a Gantt chart is made to keep track of due dates, weekly meeting agendas are created prior to meetings, and clear leadership and communication are established. The chief inspiration behind the design approach is to replicate the combination of engineering and entertainment present in theme parks like Disney World and Universal Studios. This includes visual effects such as projections and other lighting effects. One specific example from the designs is using a one-way mirror and backlighting to be able to turn off and on the mirror’s reflective effect. The integration of these effects will ideally increase the excitement of touring students, increase recruitment to the College of Engineering, and instill a pride in the current students, faculty, and alumni.
