Abstract

LOCATION IDENTIFICATION USING PASSIVE UHF RFID SYSTEMAbstract Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been widely utilized and applied in retail stores andmanufacturing environments. Over the years the advances in the technology provided the meansfor a wide range of possible applications, one of the intriguing applications is in locationidentification of stationary objects. In a warehouse environment the determination of the actuallocation of items in predefined shelves is of an essence and not their precise range, and withhundreds or even thousands of stored items the tracking, locating and retrieving one single itemis time consuming and costly, especially if the item is misplaced. An efficient cost effectivesystem is required to tag the stored items and automatically identify their locations. The systemof choice is the passive ultra high frequency (UHF) RFID system which utilizes very low costpassive tags, has a relatively long detection range, and a high detection rate making it mostsuitable for real time identification and tracking. In this paper the viability of the passive UHFRFID system to locate the position of a tagged objects, stored in a multiple shelved warehouseenvironment is investigated. A pilot system was implemented and investigated by a team of twostudents in the electronics engineering technology (EET) program during one semester seniordesign project. A 915 MHz UHF RFID system performance was investigated and analyzed in asimulated environment in the radio frequency (RF) laboratory. The concept of using RFIDsystem for position identification in the simulated storage environment was successfully proved.The system was able to identify tagged items locations with very high efficiency especially in anRF friendly environment. The work required the analysis of the RFID interrogator (reader)antenna and the passive RFID tags RF radiation pattern properties, a heedful RF survey, and thedevelopment of a real time data acquisition and monitoring program using visual basic. It is emphasized that the senior design project has provided an excellent venue for the studentsto integrate the theoretical and practical knowledge gained during their educational period andduly apply them to implement a system utilizing state of art technology in RF wirelesscommunication. The project also provided a practical hands-on opportunity to develop theirability to analyze and solve real world problems.
