Abstract

Increasing Opportunities and Improving Outcomes for Undergraduate Students in the College of XXX at XXX UniversityBeginning with the award of its first scholarships for the Fall 2010 semester, the goal of the S-STEM Scholars program at XXX University has been to increase opportunities and improveoutcomes for financially needy but academically talented students enrolled in engineering,technology, or applied sciences majors. The program supports first-time, first-year students asthey progress in their academic careers. Each scholarship awarded is equal to roughly onesemester of tuition per academic year for a full-time undergraduate student, and can be renewedfor up to 4 years (8 semesters). The objectives of the project are 1) to provide scholarships sorecipients can devote their full-time attention to academic studies and participate in studentdevelopment activities without outside employment distraction, and 2) to provide professionaldevelopment activities to connect scholarship recipients to other students and faculty, and to theengineering and applied sciences professions. Each academic year, every S-STEM Scholarchooses to participate in one of three professional development programs: Student Organizationsof Professional Societies, Undergraduate Research, or working towards placement in a Co-Op orInternship position. Criteria for scholarship awards are potential for academic success,demonstration of financial need through FAFSA filing, full-time student status, and applicants’statement indicating the professional development program they wish to participate in and howthe program is aligned with their interest, and how they will benefit. Monthly activities makestudents aware of university resources such as tutoring or supplemental instruction; and providea focus on career development, including career seminars and meeting with alumni who arepracticing engineers, applied scientists, and human resource managers from industry.Our goal is to enhance the retention and graduation rates of academically talented but financiallyneedy students, and prepare them to successfully enter the engineering and applied sciencesprofessions or to continue in graduate studies. This poster will report on program activities andoutcomes to date. It will include qualitative assessment and feedback from the S-STEMScholars themselves, and a quantitative assessment of the retention rate of S-STEM Scholars incomparison to other identified student groups in the College of XXX at XX University. Plansfor a future extension of this program that will concentrate on transfer and URM students willalso be presented.
