Farzin Heidari currently serves as an Associate Professor of industrial management and technology at Texas A&M University, Kingsville. Heidari has 23 years of teaching experience in CAD/CAM/CNC courses. He is currently serving as the Graduate Coordinator for the Industrial Management program.

Abstract

Implementation of Advanced Technology Training in South TexasThe manufacturing industry is undergoing a dramatic transformation in terms of the technologybeing used, the market dynamics, the workforce demographic, and skills needed to work inadvanced manufacturing environment. The rate of technology adoption and the ability to usetechnology to remain competitive and add value defines the degree of advanced manufacturingadoption by industry. Technical workers need strong work related competencies such ascomputer literacy, teamwork, and critical thinking as well as strong technical skills to work formanufacturing industries.In order to train qualified technicians in the South Texas region who are able to perform well inhigh-tech manufacturing, advanced manufacturing concepts should be implemented in the SouthTexas technical colleges. The study presents a guide line for implementing advancedmanufacturing curriculum in South Texas technical colleges by investigating the followingobjectives: • Introduce the advanced manufacturing processes to South Texas technical college students. • Create and implement curriculum for innovative application of technologies, processes, and methods of production. • Provide students with manufacturing practices that result in rapid transfer of science and technology into manufacturing products and processes. • Present high school students in South Texas with the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education.The information provided by this study will serve as a source from which meaningful decisionscan be made regarding the implementation and integration of advanced technology in SouthTexas technical programs.
