larger, more genericcategories which are well-known to have different levels of engagement [18]. For example, toexplain electrical safety, an instructor may conduct a traditional lecture, do a role-playing activity, tell a story, or conduct a live demonstration. All of these activities fall into the lecture categorybecause the emphasis is on the instructor conveying information to passive listeners.Alternatively, we categorized Q&A sessions differently due to their interactive nature; studentsposed questions to the instructor, who then answered the question, which often led to newquestions and discussion. In Fall 2023, three observers used the protocol in both sections for ten different class sessions, representing the five different teamwork

clicking “Show answer.” Blank answers are not counted as earnest attempts. An individual student’s earnestness is calculated as: 𝑄𝑎 𝐸= 𝑄𝑡 * 100where Q a is the number of learning questions for which a student made at least one attemptbefore revealing the answer, and Q t is the number of learning questions the student answered. In addition to earnestness, the study investigated the correlation of student earnestness withquestion difficulty, the length of time in the course, and the size of the class. Earnestness anddata about progression in the Control Systems Engineering zyBook were obtained from

relates to field-effect transistors (FETs). The right response is “C” whichemphasizes how a transistor’s threshold voltage is affected by several variables, includingtemperature, manufacturing process, and the transistor’s physical dimensions (length and width). Figure 1: Three items related to semiconductor materialsOne kind of digital logic gate, the NAND gate, is the subject of Question 10. There are two inputs(A and B) and one output (Q) on a NAND gate. A NAND gate behaves as follows: it onlyproduces a 0 (LOW) output when both of its inputs are 1 (HIGH). Because the output of a NANDgate is only 0 when both inputs are 1, “A” is correct.3 ManufacturingTwo questions on the survey, as seen in Figure 3, focus on the

three consecutive days. The three sub-topics are 1) AssetManagement Overview and Lifecycle Cost, 2) Asset Maintenance and Reliability, and 3)Managing Aging Assets. Each day, the course was held for two sessions with a break in between. The morning session comprised lectures, an hour of industry expert speaking session, and 15minutes of Q&A. The afternoon session was reserved for student evaluations and study caseactivities on the topics learned in the morning. The themes covered in the course are not often partof Bachelor’s-degree curricula, especially at electrical engineering schools. The aim of these topicswas to advance the students’ creativity and their ability to evaluate engineering problems and, accordingly, employ innovative decision

available for academic question-and-answer sessions. Some are integrated with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas [24], Moodle [25]). And some are standalone, such as Piazza [27] and Discord [28]. These tools can be used in a moderated or unmoderated fashion in a classroom setting. Messaging from an instructor can reach every student. These collaboration tools do not include any discipline-specific features (e.g., circuit analysis). However, users could post links to circuit examples as part of the Q&A discussion.Compared to the above categories of systems, the key novelty of CATE is the ability to generaterandom circuit topologies and present an analysis in a step-by-step manner. Outside of the abovecategories, one nearest
