undergoes morealterations as new elements of relevant information are retrieved and processed. In this study, we utilized the design strategy framework developed by Kruger and Cross [19, 20] toinvestigate the EDP of students. They identified the following four design strategies:1. Problem driven • Focuses on defining the design problem • Uses only the information needed to formulate the problem • Little time is spent enlarging the information space • Solution reflects specialized problem2. Information driven • Focuses on gathering information • Solution reflects the many requirements found in the assignment • Strict problem definition • Solution is focused3. Solution driven • Scans

technologies and its importance in energyassurance planning. The Smart Grid is considered a key technology to improve the reliability, quality and resiliency of power systems. These technologies bring numerous benefits such ascontinuous monitoring of power system and energy efficiency among others. Hence, it representsan important tool for supervising and assessing vulnerable or unsafe situations that couldjeopardize the reliability of the power system8.At the conclusion of the semester, a draft EAP was finalized and delivered to the NJBPU. Itaddressed significant portions of the NASEO guideline requirements and included a substantialnumber of supporting appendices.Future WorkThe EAP is a living document that requires frequent updating to reflect

Cadets may validate this course through testingor by scoring a 4 or 5 on the calculus-based electricity and magnetism Advanced Placementexam during high school. With this basic background, cadets are able to understand theunderlying principles of the project. The pyroelectric crystal accelerator project

todetermine their own level of success in our courses. Certainly, we strongly encourage andmotivate our students to devote time to studying outside the classroom and offer our personalassistance if they encounter any problems. However, if they fail to take advantage of theseopportunities, then their grade will accurately reflect their level of commitment to the course. For future study, we plan to continue the longitudinal study with the selected courses and assessthe trends on final exam grades and instructor time. Our institutional survey results of allstudents will be analyzed with targeted questions related to the use of cadet time, theeffectiveness of the quiz method, and student preference for the method versus traditionalhomework assignments

properly in the field. Designing new systems as well asunderstanding the financial attributes of the systems are both equally important in the success ofa Sustainability Engineering. In most cases undergraduate students have backgrounds that lackcertain fundamentals such as energy management, architecture design, sales, equipmentmanagement and alternative energy training.Solar AssessmentStudents at Rowan University are given a choice of clinic projects. This gives students anopportunity to pick projects that reflect their interests. We have been able to offer a number ofphotovoltaic (PV) system projects, which in aggregate offers a suite of sustainable energyprojects. Students are split into multidisciplinary teams in terms of some ME, ChE EE and

variety of projects in locations across theworld. Members have the opportunity to travel but need not do so in order to make valuablecontributions to their chapter's project.ConclusionOur experience is only one example of how a few engineers can make a significant impactbeyond their normal scope of influence. We took the knowledge and skills that we havedeveloped in our careers and used them in a capacity we had never anticipated. When asked,“What did you do with your summer vacation?”, in 2009 we can honestly say that, “We made adifference.” If asked, “Was it worth it?”, the answer is a resounding, “YES!”AcknowledgmentsThe views expressed herein are those of the authors and do not purport to reflect the position ofthe United States Military
