variety ofoptions available to them to acquire practical experience. Therefore, this diversityof experiences is encouraged for the engineer of 2020 at WSU.3. Global Learning/Study Abroad: Many have presented the need for engineersto be more aware of global issues, cultural concerns, and even global constraintsin design. In fact, Shuman, et al. [9] state that future engineering graduates need“to become highly innovative global ‘problem solvers.’” Downey, et al.[10]present the required competencies for an engineer to be “globally competent.”Global learning may even impact the lifelong learning of graduates. As studentsbecome more aware of differences in clusters, even in engineering design, theyrealize their need to learn throughout their lives[11

engineering practice. This provides anopportunity for students to research engineering projects and determine what w/c is frequentlyused for certain structures (bridge beams, highway pavements, sidewalks, etc…).Concrete Curing ExperimentThe concrete curing experiment is a laboratory exercise in which four different curing treatmentsfor concrete are analyzed. The curing regiments used for this experiment include: Moisture curing in a water filled tank, Dry curing in the laboratory, Ambient curing outside the laboratory, and Box curing with insulation.Students cast thirty-six – 4”x8” concrete cylinders to be used to determine the compressivestrength. Each curing regiment consists of nine cylinders, of which three cylinders are

upongraduation. The project work is priced at a level comparable to ‘internship’ wages ($20-25/hr) and thepreferred arrangement is a subscription agreement where the company pays a flat fee per monthfor the student team plus materials and supplies costs. A five student team for twelve months ispriced at about $85,000 and on an annual basis, the program now generates over $800,000 inrevenue. The revenue generated covers a portion of the operating cost of the program with theremainder covered by grant funding.Companies often comment on the following factors as differentiators between the RHV programand working with a ‘research’ university or a capstone design project : Confidentiality and intellectual property are a top concern and the terms of the RHV

paper.Additionally, the upcoming generation views materials retrieved online differently than thoseobtained from other sources. Clifton Poole stated “there is a tendency to think that cutting andpasting from the Internet is a form of good research and not plagiarism.”6 Several students arefurther confused because of online access to scholarly journals and conference reports throughtheir libraries web sites. Townley and Parsell note that “the Internet presents mixed messagesthat may confuse people as to what is and what is not acceptable appropriation practice.”7 The Internet also facilitates the ultimate form of plagiarism, turning in someone else’spaper as one’s own. A simple search for “research papers” on Google will produce a list ofplaces to
