students perceive bias within machine learning and search algorithms.Over 700 computer science and computer engineering students from three different institutionsparticipated in the survey from Fall 2018 to Spring 2019. Based on survey results, Google wasoverwhelmingly the preferred search engine. The participants also predicted that artificialintelligence algorithms will improve over time. The majority of respondents believe that privatecompanies, not government organizations, need to regulate their own artificial intelligencealgorithms. On average, computer science and computer engineering students acknowledge thatalgorithm bias could occur when people create algorithms. The results suggest that students arefamiliar with search engines and in

iteration of this continuum, I have gathered input from many of my colleagues. Ialso look forward to speaking to people at ASEE PSW about this work. The whole of thecontinuum is moving from “fear of other” to “unconditional love.” In its current form there areseven steps: Separate but equal, Assimilation, Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, Social justice, andReparations. This paper will describe the theory and scholars I use in the continuum. I alsoinclude descriptions of the steps with commentary on who benefits from a specific orientation. There are many questions I have about this and would very much appreciate input anddiscussion: Is this continuum helpful for conversations or interventions? Are the categoriesdescribed in a way that creates a defense

and BackgroundDespite decades of targeted effort and resources, women remain dramatically underrepresentedin engineering fields (Yoder, 2012) and this underrepresentation can lead to a number ormarginalizing experiences. Researchers have demonstrated the ways in which masculine normsand values are reflected in engineering practice and therefore code the discipline as male(Dryburgh, 1999; Secules, 2019). At the same time, technical/social dualisms map intomale/female binaries in ways that inform and support beliefs about what counts as engineeringwork and what is peripheral to the practice (Faulkner, 2000, 2007). These factors combine towhat amounts for an unwelcoming or chilly climate for women in most engineering fields(Ambrose, Bridges
