Learners Course? 2. Does the Motivating Learners Course help reduce equity gaps in student outcomes across math classes? MethodsParticipantsWe offered the Motivating Learners Course to a cohort of math faculty from a single departmentat a large Hispanic Serving (HSI) state university in California during the 2022-2023 academicyear. Information about the Motivating Learners Course was distributed widely across thedepartment and instructors volunteered to participate. For more information on the course, seethe Appendix. We evaluated the effectiveness of the course using institutional data from 60 math instructors, including 25 who participated in the course and a group of 35 comparison instructors

. MethodologyParticipants The study involved elementary and secondary educators enrolled in the 3-credit graduatecourse entitled NanoEnvironmental Engineering for Teachers (NEET). Participants attended thecourse either in person, virtually, or in a hybrid format at one of the four university campusesthat offered the course. In 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023, the course was fully in-person; in 2020, itwas virtual, and in 2021, it was in a hybrid format. Of the participants, 34 self-describedthemselves to be male, and 74 were female. Each campus had a different instructor, eachpossessing a unique teaching style and perspective. All NEET participants were invited toparticipate in the study; participation was voluntary, and informed consent was obtained from

assisting during active learning exercises. The remaining 20 minutes consist of a guest presentation by a faculty member from one ofCWRU’s engineering majors. The guest lectures typically combine an overview of the disciplineincluding typical problems solved, some stories of current work going on at the university, adescription of the major requirements and student activities, and sometimes a bit about thepresenter’s own career path. While the students explore about half of CWRU’s availableengineering programs in more depth during the laboratory activities, their initial exposure to theother half is strictly through these presentations. The course was piloted in 2019 with around a dozen students and one instructor and steadilyexpanded. levels of abstraction, and other practices wellknown to be in stark contrast with inclusive pedagogy and active learning. “Talking aboutLeaving Revisited” (Seymour & Hunter, 2019) presents damning evidence that “weeding out”works, especially for students weighed down by negative stereotypes. A recent study of 110,000students confirms that STEM prerequisite courses drive students out of STEM majors, withdisproportionately drastic implications for students from historically underserved groups(Hatfield et al., 2022). Similar to national trends, our campus data (Bonfert-Taylor et al., 2017;Bonfert-Taylor et al., 2019) shows that the majority of students who were initially interested inengineering but then declared a non-engineering major did so
