) and Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT), HAWT is relatively ineffective forbuildings and locations near buildings, and faces local resistance due to noise as well asaesthetic, visual and public safety concerns [6]. Alternatively, VAWT has been predicted as apotential solution for small-size wind turbines that are installed at buildings and near buildings[7, 8].Responding to that line of discussions, one of the engineering capstone teams have been workingon designing and building an Aesthetically Pleasing Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (APVAWT)system with a logo of the Liberty University School of Engineering for their capstone project. Toachieve the functionality and aesthetics of the APVAWT system, art design team joined fordesigning aesthetically

However, what seems to belacking in this academic push is the hands-on side of it. Engineering simply just is not about equations, butactually design and developing as well as fabricating a physical

Al-Ain United Arab EmiratesKey Words: Inverted Pendulum, Capstone Design ProjectAbstract: This paper describes the design and build of a pedagogical setup consisting of a two-DOF inverted pendulum, which is mounted on a three-DOF cart. This was a collaborative projectbetween senior students in the departments of mechanical and electrical engineering at the UnitedArab Emirates University as part of their senior design capstone project. The students withguidance from their faculty mentors followed the various designing and building stages of thedesign process of the involved mechatronics system. This includes the steps of designing the setup, the building of the prototype, and the testing and verification of

node showing a choice between possible assembly path and the AND node representinga given assembly path. The motivation for the inclusion of this assignment came from theobservation of struggling students in their capstone projects, where assembly planning wouldhave helped them. This paper describes how assembly planning principles and theirimplementation at the product level, is taught to senior mechanical engineering studentsthrough the Design and Manufacture Lab course, so that they can use assembly planning intheir capstone projects.2. The MethodologyThe methodology consists of two steps and an assessment through a practical question in themidterm examination. In the first step a lecture on AND/OR graph explaining how it is used ina matrix

capstone project they must execute procedures to assembly and load cutting tools, load and simulate programs on the controller and correctly establish work-offsets for the part to be machined. It is rare that a student runs a program without needing to troubleshoot a problem. For example, a heavy initial cut during a facing operation would indicate an incorrectly set tool length or work offset. Many of these problems can be identified and troubleshooted during the execution of the program. Others that are not immediately apparent manifest themselves in dimensional and surface finish variations in the final part. These provide the basis for students developing the skill of connecting cause and effect. This will be

will cost OEMs billions of dollars. Boeing currentlyestimates its loss, due to the 737-max grounding, at 19 billion to date [63]. In an attempt tocorrect for past financial centric mistakes Boeing appears to be moving to re-empower theirengineers [64]. Page 11 of 16A competitive manufacturing capstone course could consist of both management andengineering design students. The management students, representing finance, could constantlyrequest cost reduction after every design iteration. Initially cost reduction can easily achieved butas the project progresses cost reductions becomes increasingly difficult and real tension couldarises between students
