Upon declaring the major at the end of thesecond year, as part of their studies in the third and fourth year of their curricula, students arefrequently put in teamwork situations in an effort to prepare them for the actual work settings.Specifically, capstone design experience in their last year is meant to simulate the complexity ofthe work setting in the rigor level of the project as well as the timeline and professionalismexpected in terms of results and conduct. Next, we explain our interpretation of a (good) “design thinking” course with respect tothe four IDEF0 building blocks: input, output, mechanism, and control. projects with communities in Puerto Rico since 2002. Eight undergraduate electrical engineering students participated in three different capstone projects related to improving water service in rural communities, in particular improving the electrical system for the pump that takes water from the community well. In one of the projects, the team included students from Electrical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering, as well as Surveying and Biology students, and students from Purdue University15. biggest challenge was the issues faced with the hardware and software together. There was a repeatedissue of the soil moisture sensor generating incorrect readings, and not just working “backwards,” butworking in strange ways all together. The problem that caused this was loose wiring. To fix this, wireswere glued together where needed, and taped down to the Arduino Uno case so they would not comeloose again.Knowledge and experience on selecting and using appropriate sensors for plants development that weregained in this senior design capstone project led the authors and undergraduate students to be recentlyinvolved in a major USDA grant award titled “Design and Development of a Handheld InfraredThermography Device for Nondestructive Rapid
