Society for Engineering Education 7On the other hand in differential calculus, there is no concept of area. But the rate of change of avariable can be accumulated or integrated to provide the total change; e.g., say, we are interestedin accumulating the varying charge, Q(t), flowing into a capacitor. The rate of change of chargeis the current through the capacitor, i(t). The total accumulated charge between times t1 and t2 is tobtained by the classic integration process Q =∫t 2 i(t) dt . No harm is done interpreting the 1accumulated charge as the area under the graph of i(t), if it

If the students have questions that the live Q&A does not answer, they canpost their questions to Piazza (an online Q&A forum), which both instructors check at least oncea day. Students are encouraged to make their posts public and answer other student questions.Posting code is discouraged.Model Project and Course ProjectWhen this course was first designed, the professor’s knowledge of web development waslimited, so he used an online tutorial – the NetBeans e-commerce tutorial [14] – as a basis for thecourse project. Our community partners made two visits to our studio on campus andspent individual time with each student, and then I conducted a group Q&A where we all haddiscussions about the project in general and long-term impacts we were trying to make. Partnersgot to see study models (ex.1g, 1h, 1i, 1j, 1k) each student hand built to explain their conceptsand ideas, and students got firsthand experience of how important a study model can be onprojects where clients are themselves still in the ideation phase of a project

The occasional gulfbetween responses provides substantive opportunity for us to see what influence the process had,and what we have to focus on to improve. Here are a few examples11 with our commentsfollowing each. Q: List and describe

This material allows students to start thinking about thetype of the project before classes begin. At the first class meeting, after discussing courselogistics, explaining the team-forming process, and answering questions, students attend a‘Sponsor Q&A Expo’ where they meet with sponsors of projects
