Even though the design of instrumentation and technologies in service ofclinicians and patients clearly aligns with the skills of engineers, spontaneous collaborationbetween these two fields does not often occur. Therefore, there is an opportunity to increasecollaboration between SLPs and engineers to identify unmet needs in clinical practice andincrease research collaborations between these groups. This opportunity motivated the design ofour REU. ofrelationships with our data in recently published articles. Qualitative research has become morecommonplace and valued in engineering education in recent years. However, some tensions areapparent within qualitative research as some people within our community (researchers andconsumers of our research) are more positivist leaning while others embrace more constructivist, postmodern, and critical ways of engaging as researchers. The purpose of this paper is toconsider some of these tensions in our community through considering researchers relationshipsand use of data in journal publications. The research question guiding this study was: Through ananalysis of qualitative, engineering education manuscripts published in 2019, what is ourrelationship with

2-credit hour manufacturing science course was required for mechanicalengineering students and offered during the spring semester of senior year. Recent curriculumchanges shifted the course to the fall semester of junior year. This resulted in one academic yearwhen the course was offered twice: once to juniors in the fall and then again to seniors during thespring. Overall, this study tracked students across two years (2019-20 and 2020-21) and threeofferings of the course (Tab. 1). Enrollment for Spring ‘20 was much higher due to anexceptionally large senior cohort. Table 1: Student enrollment in the manufacturing science course Academic year: 2019-2020 2020-21 Semester
