PrairieLearn’s collaborative assessments to extract the timestamp ofeach student’s submissions to a given collaborative problem. Each submission was labeled asquick (Q), medium (M), or slow (S) based on its duration and whether it was shorter or longerthan the 25th and 75th percentile. We then applied sequence compacting techniques, sequentialpattern mining, and correlation analysis to identify latent patterns that characterize variousproblem-solving strategies across three database query languages (SQL, MongoDB, Neo4j). Theobjective of this study is to investigate the potential of temporal information - the amount of timespent on each submission attempt – in uncovering the recurrent patterns in groups’ submissionsequences. might refer to the output of the circuit (O) as next state (Q+) revealing aconflation of the two ideas.We identified the emergent themes across the two datasets in two stages. First, we compared thethemes generated from the prior studies to each other to determine which themes were domain-general and which were domain-specific. Second, we compared each theme’s supportingevidence (constructed from comparisons amongst the three other granularities) to find similartrends in how each theme emerged from the data. and limited each student’s engagement,consisting of two hours of short PowerPoint presentations with limited time for Q&A. At ourpre-REU mentor meeting in 2018, we agreed to a “gallery”-style check-in format that used low-tech posters (printed sheets taped to a wall or poster board), to which mentors, graduate students,and other faculty in the department and across campus were invited. The new format was verywell received both by the mentors and the REU students the past two summers, primarily due tothe increased interaction each REU student had with a larger number of researchers. Attendanceat the check-in meetings also increased since graduate students, post-docs, and faculty who werenot REU mentors came to talk to the students. The

TourScholars were taken on an industry field trip to Proctor and Gamble in Pineville, LA, where theytoured the laundry detergent production facility. Over lunch, the students had a uniqueopportunity for a Q&A session with the P&G engineering team. Members of the grant team andfaculty mentors accompanied the scholars on this industry tour. The drive to and from the facilityprovided an opportunity for community building between students and the faculty memberspresent.End-of-Year SurveyAt the conclusion of the year, the SSP students shared their feedback on the program through asurvey administered by an external evaluator.
