Onursal Onen is a Ph.D. candidate in the Acoustic Transducers Laboratory at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of South Florida, Tampa, Fla. His research interests are acoustic transducers, ultrasound applications, bio/chem sensors, and engineering education. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, both in mechanical engineering.
Introduction of “Microfluidics” to undergraduate and graduate fluid mechanics coursesOnursal Onen, Rasim GuldikenAs fluid mechanics course is traditionally a math-intensive course, many real-life applications cannot beproperly introduced to students. The broad content thought in undergraduate curriculum is onlyenough to cover basic physics, which do not provide insight to the current state –of-the art in fluidmechanics research as well as jobs in the industry. In this paper, we present our efforts and outcomesof introducing the microfluidics module to the undergraduate and graduate fluid mechanics course inMechanical Engineering Department at University of South Florida, Tampa, FL. The module contains alecture on fundamentals of microfluidics and applications including videos and other visual material anda live demonstration of particle separation with an in-house developed novel microfluidic device. Theoverall goal is to give students an insight to state-of-art fluid mechanics topics and micro-technology,which may lead to further interest in fluid mechanics. The evaluation of the module for the content aswell as effectiveness will be conducted by before and after surveys prepared in Respondus©, and face-to-face discussions with students exposed to these efforts.
