Abstract

In this poster, I will share the research design for a proposed research study to be implemented in the 2021 - 2022 academic year. The overarching goals of this study are to 1) identify and understand the communities that first generation college students majoring in engineering use to navigate their first year of college and 2) to understand the resources that first generation college students majoring in engineering employ to navigate challenges in their first year of college. For this study, I use the community cultural wealth framework to understand the role of community and resources that first generation college students majoring in engineering use. The Community Cultural Wealth framework “focuses on and learns from the array of cultural knowledge, skills, abilities and contacts possessed by socially marginalized groups that often go unrecognized and unacknowledged (Yosso, 2005).” The proposed methodology in this study is mixed using Social Network Analysis to both visualize and quantify communities and narrative inquiry to understand the experiences of the student participants.
