Kathleen Buse Advancing Women in the Workforce

Kathleen Buse is a business leader whose work focuses on helping organizations be more successful through the development of engaged and inclusive work cultures. As President and Founder of Advancing Women in the Workforce, she helps employers recruit, retain, and advance women.
Kathleen's experience includes 25 years in industry, beginning as an engineer and advancing to executive leadership. She spent ten years in academia where she became an award-winning researcher and top-rated educator. Kathleen was Co-creator and Faculty Director for the Leadership Lab and Adjunct Professor at Case Western Reserve University, in both the Case School of Engineering and the Weatherhead School of Management. She also was Director of Research and the Women’s Leadership Institute at ERC.
Kathleen earned a Ph.D. in Management from Case Western Reserve University, an MS in Electrical Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology and a BS in Chemical Engineering/Engineering & Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University. Her industry experience includes Kodak, Lubrizol, Avery Dennison, and Sherwin-Williams. She is an active volunteer, currently serving as event supervisor for the Ohio Science Olympid as well and for the NE Ohio regionals. She is a former board member at Magnificat High School where she chaired the Education Committee. She is past board member of the Center for Arts Inspired Learning and past chair of the United Way of Lake County. She is a founding member of the Women’s Leadership Council now known as Women United. She and her husband have three children and live in Lake County, Ohio.

Debra Musch Rising Careers, LLC

Debbi Musch is a Career Coach and owner of Rising Careers, LLC. She holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Melon University and an M.B.A. from Case Western Reserve University. She possesses over thirty-five years of professional experience in polymer technology with ExxonMobil, including traveling to many worksites around the world and a 30-month expat assignment in India. Additionally, she is an active member on the Board of Directors for Limitless Ambition Inc., a non-profit organization focused on empowering women to achieve their career potential. Her passion has always been helping to guide others in their careers and is committed and motivated to do so through Rising Careers, LLC.

Allison Goodman ArtCenter College of Design

Allison Goodman is a professor at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California where she teaches classes in both communication and information design. Professor Goodman received her BFA in Design from Carnegie-Mellon University and her MFA from ArtCenter. She is also an accreditor for NASAD, The National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Abstract

The research detailed in this paper focuses on the career experiences of women who obtained degrees between 1979 and 1983. Exploring the women’s achievements, challenges, and reflections on their work in the STEM professions using the Social Cognitive Career Theory, recommendations are provided for educators to prepare both women and men for long term professional STEM careers. Especially for the women, being equipped with research-based, practical skills and strategies has the potential to increase their retention in these professions.
