tool for control systems Matilda Ho Mechanical Engineering Student University of Texas at Dallas AbstractAmong engineering students, control systems are a notoriously challenging subject for itsabstractness—making difficult to connect each of its subtopics for a comprehensive understanding. The undergraduate capstone project discussed in this paper focused on developing a free, onlineeducation tool for control systems that integrates the traditional curriculum with interactivecomponents to create a more comprehensive learning experience. The technical products used todevelop the learning tool

non-profit organization called Christ Church Camp (CCC)that served as the primary client for design. The project was to design a neighborhood for those transitioningout of homelessness and into greater self-sufficiency. The design had to fit within a budget determined bygrant money sought by CCC. There were engineering challenges concerning how to build sustainable tinyhomes and use rainwater harvesting to support an urban garden. Student designers also had to learn thebasics of social work and poverty alleviation so that they could design a neighborhood that would buildconfidence and community for homeless individuals. Frequently, the homeless we served were coming outof addictions and had deficient relational skills. We conducted the class

improving the qualityand throughput of undergraduate engineering programs: 1) development of interdisciplinaryundergraduate engineering curricula, 2) team-based engaged learning and research, 3) research-basedteaching practices (RBTPs), 4) collaborations between academia and industry, 5) online/distancelearning and telecommuting skills, and 6) the persistence of traditionally underrepresented students. In addition, future prospects of interdisciplinary project-based learning are discussed from threeaspects: student competency, faculty development, and industry collaboration. IntroductionThe need for highly trained and capable engineers to address increasingly complex problems that facesociety is clear

produced to give other faculty a starting point on etiquette in the virtualclassroom [83]. The Engineering Education Faculty’s weekly meetings have ranged from hearing prominentspeakers from around the country on their role in engineering education, book reviews on currenteducational resources, and open discussions on the current state of teaching online. This diversityand ability to be a part of the group has added to the tight-knit community we have developed.Multiple daily writing groups have been created to provide faculty with a small group to meet with.Usually, the meetings are one hour, writing for twenty-five minutes, taking a break, and writingagain. The focus gives you a set time to complete work, get feedback on a project or

and was also afforded the opportunity to lead an impactul Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Principles of Engineering (PoE) course which is a project-based learning survey of the engineering discipline. Since the Summer of 2015 I have been privileged to work with the Texas A and M Sketch Recognition Lab (TAMU SRL) to evaluate a couple of online tutorial tools (Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS)) cur- rently under development, Mechanix and Sketchtivity, that provide immediate constructive feedback to the students and student-level metrics to the instructors. I presented on this work at the state and national PLTW Conventions and at CPTTE in 2016. I also spent 5 semesters beginning the Fall of 2015 taking online
