best practices to usein an online classroom. The first step is to choose a delivery method of the content in the courses. From research, it is seen that a majority of students are able to adapt to learning from onlinevideo lectures when synchronous with the recordings posted for future review [24]. At RowanUniversity, Zoom™ and Canvas LMS™ (Learning Management System) is chosen to be theonline platform to conform with the online teaching standards and the ease of use of theseprograms [25]. Now that the online platforms have been chosen, research is done on how toeffectively teach in an online setting. To have a successful online learning environment theinstructor must have an increased time commitment and virtual presence, include more time

explicitly included writing instruction and emphasis on whatwas important in technical writing and the process of writing. The workshops also included timein-class for students to work on and revise work, with the help of WC staff, designated WCtutors and the course instructors. This structure therefore incorporated active learning andexplicit technical communication instruction that was not included in the course previously.Future work will evaluate the impact of these workshops on the quality of writing. In 442, the students worked in groups of four and received extra credit for setting up a groupmeeting with a WC tutor prior to submitting their report. They could receive extra credit for thetutor reviewing their experimental plans and

student success [1, 4]. Researchers have called for curricular changes to supportstudents to develop care ethics, such as situating design problems as socio-technical andevaluating solutions from a justice lens [5], as this is in line with professional practice [6-8]. Weargue that such approaches, while critical for students, can be strengthened by greaterarticulation of ways faculty display and model care. However, a majority of research on howinstructors show care has been conducted in K-12 settings [9] or in fields where care is a majorfacet of practice (e.g., health care). Thus, care is poorly operationalized, especially in the contextof chemical engineering, making it unclear what faculty might do that students are likely toperceive of as

ways, if any, do student understandings change between their first and second years?Broader Project BackgroundThis analysis used an existing data set generated as part of a larger project that encompasses sixuniversities across three countries. Member institutions are equally distributed, two each fromthe United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa. The research team for this project includesfaculty and graduate students from all three countries, with direct representation from five of thesix included institutions. The objective of the project is to capture various aspects of the studentexperience over the course of a student’s undergraduate career and is thus a longitudinalundertaking beginning in the first year and ending with the

important skill in traditionalundergraduate engineering curricula (4). Engineering students are often expected to work ingroups during laboratory or design courses, but a large portion of engineering classes arelecture-based and students compete for grades based on individual work products (6).  Whilethere is a growing emphasis on implementing cooperative learning strategies in engineeringclassrooms, students need to practice teamwork skills for these learning methods to succeed (6,7).  Thus, it could benefit engineering departments to ensure that there are other ways for theirundergraduates to gain experience working in teams. In recent decades, many programs have adopted active and collaborative learning in theirengineering programs, and a
