Because of the nature and the cost of the laboratories (clean rooms, andother expensive facilities) needed to support such a program that HVCC could not afford, itwas decided to seek a “partner universities

natural partnership, utilizing the faculty, pre-engineering curriculum and physical campus of UW-Fox Valley, andthe ABET accredited mechanical engineering curriculum, faculty, and equipment of UW-Platteville. The collaboration agreement was signed in October of 2001 and the first mechanicalengineering courses became available in the fall semester of 2002.Construction for the new engineering facility on the UW-Fox Valley campus began in June of2003. The floor plan of the new 3160 ft2 engineering facility is shown in Figure 3. It included a1595 ft2 laboratory, 500 ft2 of storage and four offices. Building construction costs totaled$375,000.Nearly an additional $250,000 was spent on test and research equipment for the laboratory, which included a

“distributed learning network” along withplans for the future.II. History and Distance Learning Model DevelopmentThe Southwest ENTC department promotes a positive learning environment through the use ofhands-on laboratory experience. Large investments in training equipment combined with collegelevel theory helped set Southwest apart from other Mid-south schools. Feed back from the 2002ABET accreditation review included praise for the laboratories and hands-on curriculum. Feedback from employer surveys indicated a high degree of satisfaction with the technicalproficiency of Southwest graduates. Finally, feed back from student surveys indicatedsatisfaction with the hands-on approach. Over 30 years of positive feed back made the facultyuneasy about

and other ATE organizations. Areas oftechnology enhancement will be identified, assessed for relevance and incorporated intoexisting or new courses. This process with faculty externships will provide an ongoingopportunity for the RCNGM faculty to stay current. NSF’s ATE program has already invested in the development and implementationof six online technology courses in photonics and telecommunications (NSF 0101654).The results of these piloted courses have demonstrated the need for a blended delivery ofonline courses, using on-site laboratories to augment online delivery of thereby. Inaddition, the following curriculum elements were identified as being critical to thedevelopment of a Next Generation Manufacturing focus within the COT

both the guidance symposium and the follow- 5up session. Participants were introduced to the various fields of engineering andalso engaged in a laboratory activity Numbers Impacted: 110 guidance counselors and staff participated in the full day symposiums for engineering and engineering technology outlining opportunities in education and careers with a focus on diversity and gender equity. Over 90 percent reported that their understanding of engineering changed as a result of this event. (Three events offered in total.) 65 Engineers and Technicians: participated in the guidance events. Follow up sessions have occurred with a subgroup to explore the
