deployedinto the open ocean. This is prevalent in hurricane modeling research, where larger data setswould greatly increase our understanding of the ocean’s effect on the formation of hurricanes. Aproposed method of increasing the available oceanic data is the deployment of manyAutonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) capable of autonomously collecting data over a widearea during long missions. Without support ships, these AUVs would be deployed remotely, navigate to the location of interest, and loiter in the area collecting data on oceanic conditionsleading up to hurricanes. To promote the development of such AUVs in the ocean, the National Proceedings of the 2022 ASEE North Central Section Conference Copyright

early in the one-semester courseto switch to the two-semester stretch course. We are also allowing students who struggled in thesecond half of the one-semester course to take the second stretch course the following semesterinstead of repeating the full course. Rather than repeat all the content, they can spend an entiresemester mastering the topics they struggled with. The paper concludes with thoughts about the benefits of this approach, which is primarilyincreased flexibility enabling students with diverse backgrounds to have a path that best suitstheir needs. The main challenges come with advising students and identifying students whowould benefit from the new stretch option. Proceedings of the 2022 ASEE North Central
