build on this research by extending mechanistic reasoningas a lens to understand how non-science major undergraduates in a teacher education programexplain machine learning examples––including sociopolitical impacts of those systems. We alsoexamine how the teacher candidates (TCs) construe preliminary lesson plans for how they mightintegrate machine learning in their teaching with young adolescents.MethodWe conducted a design-based research study [10], [11], [12] within a science education methodscourse at a large land grant university in the northeastern United States.
