Dr. Greenberg’s interests include signal processing for hearing aids and cochlear implants, as well as research in bioengineering education.Mark Bourgeois, Northwestern University Mark Bourgeois is a PhD student in Philosophy at Loyola University Chicago as well as the Administrator of the Northwestern site of the VaNTH ERC. He teaches ethics in biomedical engineering courses at Northwestern and in the VaNTH summer REU program, as well as a dedicated course in ethics in regulation in the Northwestern School of Continuing Studies graduate program

hypothesis, design an experimental protocol to test the hypothesis,conduct an experiment or survey, and use an appropriate statistical analysis of the data. Thecourse also requires students to design an Informed Consent form, adopt high ethical standardsfor research involving human subjects, and generate a scientific manuscript to report the results.We found that a close integration between experimental methods of testing/data collection wascritical in the initial and final stages of design. Additionally, they participate in a discussion series with readings relevant to the field,often on contentious topics (embryonic stem cell research, the role of design in biomedicalresearch, biomedical ethics, etc.). In other classes in the third year of study in our curriculum,students focus on concise, clear technical writing, as well as oral presentations. Other requiredcourses within our Engineering School emphasize the global, societal, and ethical impact ofengineering endeavors.The sections that follow describe the methods we have implemented in our BiomedicalEngineering Capstone Course sequence to address the need for additional professional skillsdevelopment in our undergraduates. local Ventures group. The reviewers at the Ventures group will judge whether theidea is suitable for a non-disclosure agreement, and will base their decision only on thefinal report. The prospect of a design beginning the patent process, serves as furthermotivation to clearly express the ideas of the design. Due to the quantity and quality ofwriting required, as well as the revision process used, both of our senior design coursessatisfy internal institutional writing requirements.EthicsAs design teams are required to enter a medical environment, student witness first-handthe importance of medical ethics. All students are required to undergo the relevantHIPAA training at the mentor’s medical institution
