Society for Engineering Education, 2008 DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTERDISCIPLINERY LABORATORY CURRICULUM FOR EMERGING PRODUCT MANUFACTURINGAbstractThis paper summarizes an effort to develop an interdisciplinary capstone design projectcourse and laboratory in manufacturing. As manufacturing laboratories are veryexpensive to develop, this program is designed based on distributed and integratedmanufacturing processes on campus. As students can gain access to various facilities, they will be able to make various products, including some emerging products, such asEDM machines, fuel cells, etc. As this capstone design project provides opportunities forstudents to design, manufacture, it stimulates the students’ interest in real-world productrealization. Both

of the CSM12C32 module is small enough that our microcontroller projects havebecome truly embedded systems. Third, the skills and the tools covered in this microcontrollercourse are useful to the students that they prefer to use them in their capstone design projects.Fourth, the student evaluation results of this course taught by the author have been among thehighest in our department and the college. This microcontroller course with the Freescale studentlearning kits is a viable approach for equipping students with the skills and tools that they needfor prototyping embedded systems and for preparing them for their future design projects.I. INTRODUCTIONThe microcontroller course is one of the most demanding courses in our undergraduate

in its third andfinal course of the sequence, ME450. The effectiveness of this capstone course atinspiring a somewhat reluctant student population to get excited about applyingengineering principles and problem-solving techniques is primarily due to a syllabus thatis structured around three engineering design projects, or EDPs. Page 13.618.5Engineering Design Projects (EDPs)ME450 teaches mechanical engineering design by incorporating unique teaching stylesand course material to include three Engineering Design Problems (EDPs) that are gearedtowards generating student interest and excitement. These projects, which becomeprogressively more complex

efforts and make appropriate use of available resources tocomplete their projects in a timely manner. They are also required to engage fellow students indiscussions about the techniques which they applied on a class discussion list. Studentsdocument their work in electronic project journals (in PDF format) that are submitted for reviewon a regular basis. In addition, students are required to answer a series of discussion questionsevery week, submit those answers, and participate in group discussion over the discussionquestions at regular intervals. There is no special open capstone project, but students are giventhe opportunity to demonstrate (through the virtual classroom environment) an example of aproblem solution which they feel is

2008 to fix the problem.2. These experiments expose you to a way how data acquisition is done in real industrial applications. If not, please elaborate. The average rating for this question is 4.3.3. These experiments are reasonable in content and length. If not, how can we improve it? The average rating for this question is 4.6From the assessment result, we can conclude that the students are very satisfied with theseexperiments. In addition one of the students who took this course in the fall of 2005 used asimilar PCI DAQ board manufactured by Measurement Computing in his capstone project todesign and build a Software Controlled Radio. The experiments in this course provided him withimportant knowledge for his senior design
