He received a BS in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1980, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware in 1987. Before becoming Director of the School of Engineering at JMU, Dr. Kander was Department Head of Integrated Science and Technology, and before that was a faculty member in the
