student mentoring program of departmental alumni mentors that emphasized careerpath identification and professional development. A total of 58 sophomores, juniors and seniorsparticipated in the program along with 36 alumni mentors from the Arkansas Academy ofChemical Engineers and other young alumni. Twelve circles were formed, with each circlecontaining three mentors and 4-6 students. Five mentoring events were held in the Fall 2021semester and three additional events were held in the Spring 2022 semester plus the final in-person celebration event in April. 2022, not only did the REU Site host 7 undergraduate students from around the country, aparallel National Science Foundation Research Experiences and Mentoring (REM) programhosted 7 students. This REM program focused on transforming our efforts to help undergraduatestudents from Northwest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) succeed in careers in scienceand engineering. From our previous REU programs and conversations with NWACC students andfaculty, we were able to identify a need to increase the awareness of STEM research opportunitiesavailable to community college students, as well as their confidence to pursue them. conference papers may be more suited to complete within one semester. Furthermore,team formation is critical to the success of the students. The NRT team formed the capstoneteams with student input after considering interest in final products, and student timeline tograduation. It is also important for teams to work on a topic of interest relevant to their researchand career goals, but it was challenging aligning team research topics with all students’ academicbackgrounds. To this end, the NRT team is examining how to make interdisciplinary research anintegral part of the graduate discipline. that UCO employs tosupport their students’ growth. Other examples of institutionalized efforts are centralized throughstudent support offices or career services. For example, the University of Colorado Boulder’sSkills for Success program assists students in recognizing skills they have and in learning skillsthat they lack [5], and the University of Minnesota’s Office for Student Affairs has adoptedStudent Development Outcomes that go beyond typical program outcomes and help preparestudents to be “engaged and effective citizens.”Within the context of engineering colleges, we find numerous models on how they develop theirstudents’ non-technical skills, three of which are frequently referenced in the literature. First,some programs aim to develop
