The students learn touse agile software engineering practices, most notably Scrum and Kanban, to deliver incrementalgame prototypes in each course whereas the focus of the second course is a term-long roleplaywhere students play the roles of developer-owners of a failing game company. students ending their studies in 2012 were higher than in previous years [2].The study also highlighted an increase in four-year graduation rates from 29 percent in 2006 to33 percent in 2011. However, the graduation rate dropped to 22 percent in 2015, and surveyresponses from colleges were inconsistent, making it difficult to determine the exact rate in thatyear.Numerous studies have researched the factors influencing retention rates in engineeringprograms. While our analyses of previous cohorts of REU students have shown no genderdifferences in student gains in research-based experience and skills during the REU program[27], it would be interesting to further examine whether correlations exist between studentlearning gains from research experiences with a student’s sense of belonging. By furtheranalyzing the additional sections of the survey based on the reported participant sex, moreinformation can be gathered on whether correlations exist between a student’s sense of belongingand growth mindset, scientific identity, self-efficacy, and likelihood of graduate school. Current and past implementations of the course indicate thatstudents gain the most from the course when they engage in both the MOOC and the hands-onbuild and launch section, but still gain a great deal of understanding and self-efficacy from theonline course alone. When taking part in the hands-on portion, students become more curiousand ask insightful questions they had not thought of during the earlier sections, indicatingqualitatively an increase in student interest in further pursuing rocketry. While these three beliefs designations may notalways accurately predict behavior, research has shown these types to contribute the most. Otherresearch suggests that iterative self-reflection and reconciliation of our past behavior can helpdevelop more robust beliefs about our future actions [15].Beliefs occur at both a conscious (espoused) and subconscious (implicit) level which are derivedfrom our socialization [29].
