“surroundings” in an engineeringclassroom. We posed an open-ended reflection question to engineering undergraduates at a largeUS university about their classroom surroundings and its impact on their learning andcomprehension. The reflection prompt defined surroundings as the “conditions and objects thatsurround you.” This reflection question was part of an NSF-funded study on the use of weeklyreflection in a flipped fluid mechanics course to drive metacognitive development and lifelonglearning skills. During class, students were encouraged to collaborate with their peers duringproblem solving to achieve collective understanding and interact with the instructor. Based on aninductive, emergent content analysis of the reflection data with two analysts, we

Specifically, we have focused significanteffort on (1) implementing new professional development opportunities for GTAs in the targetedcourses and (2) holding reflection/re-planning activities for CCTs.Pre-Semester GTA WorkshopIn August 2022, we implemented a two-day pre-semester workshop for new GTAs in theparticipating departments. Introduction of this workshop was motivated by the significant roleGTAs play in implementing teaching change in the large courses targeted by the project (e.g.,leading recitations and labs) and the need for GTAs to have structured professional developmentbefore the semester begins. In the early years of the project, GTAs met semi-regularly withintheir departments during the semester

It also discusses the use of reflection exercises and vignettes in un-derstanding, promoting, and fostering behavioral patterns that undergraduate computing studentsidentify as related to dispositions they experience in the course. Preliminary data and results fromthe study are also presented.1 IntroductionA major concern in higher education is to ensure that graduates are “career-ready,” that is, they notonly have learned knowledge and skills that are needed by employers but have also developed theprofessional traits and attitudes necessary for a successful career. This is especially important infields such as engineering

Faculty come from all five departments of the college. For this three-year NSF-funded project, Year 1 was dedicated to deepening reflection asindividuals and building trust as a cohort. Now, in Year 2, the FLC is focused on translatingpedagogical practices from literature and other resources into particular courses. This cohort hasexperienced some adjustments as some faculty leave the FLC and new faculty choose to join theFLC. Since this cohort continues to grow, this paper presents key features that have supportedthe FLC’s formation and then transition

engineerThese questions revolved around the idea of reflecting on what it is like to be an engineer, aswell as reflecting on what they personally did that resembled an engineer. Embodying these traitsand reflecting on them has the function of shaping both, their subjective and objective identities,as perceived by others [6]. The first question was asking about what these children thought thetraits of an engineer to be, and the second part of the question was about which of these traits didthe children display while engaging with the kits. A discussion follows below of the moreprominent responses. Realistic Thinking. Realistic thinking was one of the traits that was recognized asimportant for engineers. Engineers do need to be realistic when

Othernegative experiences included feeling they did not understand the purpose of assignments on thecourse learning management system and other team members were not contributing. At thebeginning of the semester, assignments focused on ethics, teaming, how to do a literature reviewand document research, and other preliminary topics. Students wanted to dive right into theresearch rather than completing training and pre-research activities. Additionally, journalassignments requested that students reflect on their experiences weekly. Engineering students arenot accustomed to

Specifically, we aimto promote engineering identity and persistence by gamifying the learning experience to fostersituational interest [7] and to support students’ self-efficacy for engineering [8]. Additionally, educators' self-efficacy also influences their confidence in teaching hardware concepts [9]. Engineering ProgramsAbstractChemical engineering education needs to be updated to reflect its growth and inclusion ofelements from various fields, such as pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, biotechnology, andconsumer products. As the industry continues to expand and there is a greater need forcommunication and leadership abilities in the 21st century, engineers who are working areanticipated to possess both technical expertise and professional skills. However, the typicalchemical engineering undergraduate core curriculum has not adapted to prepare students for themultiple needs encompassed by the chemical industry. Lack of industry-relevant examples/topicsand applications in the course contents results in less motivated and/or engaged

Several reminders to thestudents with an explanation of the special event with dinner helped with the high participationrate (although some students could attend for only part of the time).Meetings with the CoMPASS support team (i.e., WPI faculty and staff) and the artist took placebefore the event to plan out the 2-hour event, and Figure 1 displays the flow of the eventcomponents. Both groups startedby developing a peer observation instrument that was specific to their teaching modality. The maincontent for these two instruments is shown below in table 1. This instrument was used to gatherfeedback from peers on various aspects of teaching, including course design, classroommanagement, and student engagement. Building on our pilot work with students, our theory of action is that the experience ofcomparing example work 1) meaningfully supports students’ design thinking mindset (helpingstudents think like designers), 2) critical thinking and reasoning (helping students to make andexplain decisions), and 3) ultimately their design performance (as students apply their thinking). These three variables are critical

Conventional wisdom is that it is good for us; we know we will learnabout the differences between good and bad proposals, and developing a relationship with aprogram officer or two can’t be a bad thing. And then what? Logging into Fastlane and figuringout the process for submitting a proposal review is one part, and tutorials can help with that.Constructing a review that shows our understanding of the field, reflects an understanding of theproposed work, and provides useful feedback to both the principal investigator (PI) and theprogram officer is another part. The teachers sought to createSTEM learning opportunities that explicitly drew on students’ funds of knowledge, specificallytheir home language practices (including translanguaging) and border-crossing experiences. The long history of empirical learning in the field of construction engineering showsthe significant potential of cognitive development through direct experience and reflection onwhat works in particular situations [4]. Of course, the complex nature of the constructionindustry in the twenty-first century cannot afford an education through trial and error in the realenvironment. However, recent advances in computer science can help educators develop virtualenvironments and gamification platforms that allow students to explore various scenarios andlearn from their experiences.
