Aguideline entitled “Effective Engineering Writing,” which was adapted from Parker,(8) isgiven to the students (and included as Appendix E).The students turn in one copy of the draft report for the instructor, with all group mem-bers identified. Each group also turns in additional anonymous copies with no identifica-tion of group members. These anonymous copies are randomly distributed to othermembers of the class who have one week to perform a peer evaluation of the draft. This assignment was designto evaluate students’ mastery of the performance objective #1 and to evaluate the ability ofstudents to perform an independent research and write a short report. The submitted reports wereof higher than expected quality reflecting that students have a good understanding of thechallenges caused by global warming and climate change. The homework grades were in therange 90-100 with an average of 94.0. The combining of topics seemed natural in that codes and materialcapabilities (ASTM specifications within the labs) ultimately leads to the specificationsprepared for contractors. Contract writing was moved to a graduate level. Combiningthese two courses allowed for the addition of CENG 3371 Introduction to EnvironmentalEngineering (Fig 2) for those students graduating in 2010 and later. A three year study from 2000 to 2002 was conducted in the Mechanics of Materialscourse in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at West Point. In the first year,very few physical models and demonstrations were used in the classroom. In the two subsequentyears, several props and demonstrations were added to the course.
