Education, 2023 Design an Energy-Saving Device: An Engaging Module for a Laboratory CourseAbstractThis paper describes a new module that was developed and deployed in a sophomore circuitslaboratory course, how it was evaluated, and the results of student surveys addressing theeffectiveness of the module. The module challenges the students to design, build, anddemonstrate a simple device of their choosing that has the potential to save energy. In addition tolearning how to program a microcontroller, the objectives of the module are to give studentspractice in identifying real world engineering opportunities and to connect the class content tothe real world.The module is designed to engage the students by

initial analyses, and plan exchange visits. In spring, students at SU carried outlaboratory work to create synthetic coffee wastewater. PUJ visited Seattle University in earlysummer to conduct laboratory tests using the synthetic coffee wastewater with granular mediaand bag filters. Seattle University went to Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Bogotá in latesummer to tour coffee farms, see various coffee bean harvesting and water processingtechniques, and conduct laboratory tests using the same filters but with real coffee wastewater.Experimental results show that sand filters could significantly improve turbidity but suffer fromsevere head loss, while the bag filters perform poorly with synthetic wastewater but showpromise with real coffee

Using Mt. Mazama Volcanic AshAbstractFirst-year engineering students from a variety of disciplines participated in a research project toimprove the firmness and stability of a local trail using ash from the Mt. Mazama volcaniceruption. Previous work had shown success in applying a Mazama Ash treatment to small testpatches, so this work aimed to implement the surface treatment at a larger scale. The project,which was the basis for an Introduction to Engineering course, was divided into several taskswhich were assigned to small student teams. Team responsibilities included laboratory testing ofmix designs, raw material handling and processing, applicator prototype design and construction,educational community outreach, and others.
