define problem-solving as “the cognitive process directed atachieving a goal when no solution is obvious to the problem solver (p. 287). xvi” This definitionsuggests that problem-solving has four characteristics. Problem-solving is 1) cognitive (i.e., it isan internal process that occurs in the person’s mind), 2) process-oriented (the manipulation ofknowledge), 3) goal-directed (i.e., the process is guided by the person’s goals), and 4) personal(dependent on the person’s skills and knowledge).
