resources in thedevelopment and operation of programs dedicated to facilitating the successful completion ofdegrees in these fields. Strategies such as creating project-based clubs and academic learningcenters support application of knowledge outside the classroom, contributing to experience withengineering and computer science content [1], [2]. Bridge programs, research opportunities, andstudent group centers add to academic confidence while strengthening ties to people within anacademic community [3], [4], [5], [6]. Retention literature is closely tied to that of Self Efficacy(SE) and the value of Albert Bandura’s research [7]. At the core of Bandura’s work is a person’sbelief they can repeatedly engage with something challenging and eventually

outcomes for the cohort of students where the Check-In Tool© wasdeployed. Further study is needed to assess the validity of the single-item questionnaire and toassess whether the significant improvement found in this study was due to the deployment of theCheck-In Tool© or due to a Hawthorne effect.BackgroundResearch has shown that some level of stress is necessary for effective learning (a.k.a. eustress),however, too much stress leads to distress and can negatively affect student learning [1]. Inaddition to seeking help from counseling for students to manage stress, research has shown thatshort and simple interventions conducted by instructors during class time can improve student’smental wellness which in turn can lead to better learning

appears to be a research gap in how culturalcontexts and indigenous perspectives influence the early stages of problem identification [1, 2, 3],underscoring the need for studies into such aspects of problem identification. This study exploreshow first-year engineering students develop problem-identification skills through the lens ofindigenizing engineering education, aiming to weave indigenous knowledge and culturalperspectives seamlessly into the curriculum. By fostering a culturally inclusive mindset, ourobjective is to enable students with the capacity to recognize and creatively address complexenvironmental, sustainability, and social challenges that disproportionately impact indigenouscommunities. past year alone [1]. This level ofpoliticization has been associated with an increase in anti-LGBTQ violence [2], on the heels ofseveral major national victories for LGBTQ rights in the past decade [3]. As such, many LGBTQpeople have heightened concern regarding their participation in society, in spite of socialattitudes steadily trending toward greater LGBTQ acceptance for the past several decades [4]. This state of affairs is especially troubling for folks working to broaden the participationof LGBTQ people in engineering and other STEM fields. LGBTQ experiences and identities arestigmatized in STEM disciplines due to the perception that science and engineering areinherently apolitical in their work [5]—the politicization of LGBTQ
