This paperinvestigates the ongoing work of restructuring a traditional one-semester, 3-credit springcapstone experience in materials science and engineering into a two-semester fall (1-credit) andspring (2-credit) experience. A significant part of the raison d'être of this course was an avenueto integrate the emerging topics of AI and ML into the MS&E curriculum at Cal Poly. The existing computational MSE initiatives inupper-level courses focus mostly on using computational tools designed for research andindustry to solve problems [5], [6], [7], [9], [10].
