missions are much more focused on providing educational opportunities tolocal students who wish to pursue an education beyond high school. With a few exceptions,community college faculty seek external funding to develop new academic programs, improvecurricula and teaching, or implement student-centered professional development programs, oftenin partnerships with four-year institutions. Community college faculty's two main responsibilitiesare teaching and advising students. In this context, mentoring takes shape (Hensel, 2021). Forinstance, mentoring may occur in the classroom, the laboratory, and the office. In theirclassrooms, faculty uncover the hidden curriculum, introduce academic language, and promotethe notion of students becoming scholars

Texas at El PasoDr. Helmut Knaust, University of Texas at El Paso Helmut Knaust is Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso. He is a Banach space geometer by training. His pedagogical interests include inquiry-based learning, peer-led team learning, and the use of the internet as a learning tool. In 2015 Dr. Knaust was the recipient of a Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award from the UT System. Dr. Knaust serves as co-principal investigator of NSF’s Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation program in the UT System, and its Bridge to the Doctorate program at UTEP. ©American Society for Engineering Education, 2024Perspectives

In a study focusing on thesuccess of Black males at PWIs, the author highlights DDEPs as one mechanism contributing tothe positive school experience for Black students (Hardnett, 2023). URMs.Research has shown that post-baccalaureate programs provide participants knowledge on thegraduate school and employment application process and keys to success in STEM careers orgraduate studies [7].The project's goal was to provide an enriching experience to students unable to participate inresearch due to the restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic or academic schedules.This just-in-time experiential educational opportunity aimed to provide post-baccalaureates to:(1) acquire another professional credential to make them more marketable in the STEMworkforce, (2) gain laboratory knowledge should they decide to pursue an advanced certificate ordegree as part of their long-term goals, and (3) attend professional development workshops
