the fall of 2021 we formed a community of practice (CoP) for lab and designinstructors at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign [9]. While building this CoP, weleveraged the Networked Improvement Communities (NICs) framework to facilitate members(instructors) from different contexts (departments, class sizes, student levels) collaborating ondeveloping best practices across all courses toward a shared goal: improving college lab courseexperiences for instructors and students. The NICs are both learning and design communitiesgrounded in the idea of “learning through doing” [10].
