physical stamina and analytical minds. The first restriction eliminatedthe women who were about half of the population from the workforce, and the secondrestriction eliminated a large number of disfranchised who were not considered brightenough. As engineers, we should not feel guilty, as this was the norm in most professionsin their early days. Over decades, things have changed. Physical strength is not a pre-requisite and mathematics and science are not in the monopoly of a select group. We,therefore, expect to see a fair representation of all in this profession. In this presentationwe look at the present status of equal opportunity in engineering education and discussways by which such opportunities can be afforded to people who have not

Intelligent Design and Engineering Design Education Suzanne Keilson, Loyola College, Baltimore, MD 21210AbstractThis paper briefly explores the intersection of current controversies about evolutionary theory and ideasfrom intelligent design (ID) with engineering education. Some of the statements about the nature ofdesign that were brought to the fore in recent controversies in the United States and elsewhere overevolution and intelligent design can have significance for engineers and engineering educators [1]. Fromthe time of the “blind watchmaker” to current day arguments, reference to human-made works andengineering abound in the literature of theology, evolutionary theory and its opponents. Whatever

. This newfound relationship could also help to debunk stereotypes. The non-black communities and religious and academic institutions should also share in rectifying theshortage of black engineers and other science-related careers by realizing these and many other generalfacts: a. that racial inequality exists and is somewhere lurking in the minds of many African-Americans-- much of it due to direct or indirect past experiences; b. that cultural and value differences exist and may be prioritized more in the African-American community than in other American communities. These cultural and value dissimilarities are not necessarily wrong, but might require a different method of evaluation and should not be viewed as

An integrated Approach to Creating Student-Awareness, Pedagogy and Efficient Management of Multi-Cultural Teams in Engineering Projects Anilkumar Bhate, M.G. Prasad, Lex McCusker Stevens Institute of Technology Hoboken, New JerseyAbstractTeamwork is an essential aspect of most engineering projects. Often the teams consist of memberscoming from diverse backgrounds, and such diverse backgrounds may lead to internal conflicts within theteams. Engineering students, many to become managers in their future careers, need to be educated abouthow to deal with the diversity in their work teams. Teams

. The paper can be graded based on the summary andrelating the speaker’s work to the course. The reaction papers can be evaluated for the outcome on theevidence the student expanded his/her view, as the rubric discusses.journals and the Blackboard message board The message board feature of Blackboard or some other type of journal can be used in a similarmanner. Both can be used in all engineering courses to encourage students to link what they learn in classto the real world. On Blackboard, either the professor or the students can post a topic to be discussed. There would be a minimum number of entries required per student per week. In a journal, students canwrite anything on their minds about what they are learning in class, especially

reported last year. An increase ininformation security events within the academia may lead to federal and state legislative efforts thatwould ultimately add upon the requirements in handling private information within the academic world.Unlike other entities, academic institutions however have to strike a delicate balance between the freecirculation of ideas and the need for protection of personal information. With that in mind we havepursued to investigate two different aspects of the computers security within the academic realm. In thefirst phase, in the next section we are providing a statistical overview of the academic world securityincidents and reaction to them. In the second phase, detailed in the third section we are presenting
