Incorporating Creativity into a Capstone Engineering Design Course Keith L. Hohn Department of Chemical Engineering Kansas State UniversityAbstractCreativity is a critical part of engineering design that should be encourage and nurtured inengineering students. Two creative exercises were implemented into a senior chemicalengineering design course. The first exercise was designed to enhance student awareness of therole of creativity in engineering design. In this exercise, students were asked to create a piece ofartwork depicting their major (chemical engineering) in some way and to reflect on the processthey followed to produce

3The general role of the tutors consisted of three basic tasks: facilitating and encouraging thegroup process described above; observing and assessing individual contributions to the groupprocess; and facilitating technical learning12. It is relatively easy to see what is required by eachof these tasks, but implementing them successfully in practice was very challenging. One way ofdoing so, and which was used in this program, is to use Socratic inquiry12. In Socratic dialog, thetutor asks a series of questions which encourage the student to critically analyze (and hopefullyultimately solve) the problem. The degree of guidance provided can be varied (through the tutor'schoice of questions) to reflect the individual needs of the student

evaluation of criterion 3i.Proceedings of the 2010 Midwest Section Conference of the American Society for Engineering Education 2Students can also be required in their courses to perform case studies on industrial products oraccidents, and evaluated on their reports, forcing them to research the project beyond theconfines of the classroom. Alternatively, students can be required to learn rudimentary use ofunfamiliar computer programs to solve problems outside of class, and evaluated on theseassignments to reflect their ability to learn the use of the program on their own.As an example, one of the authors (MD) gave an assignment in a Heat Transfer

. This may have industry potential for integrated design procedures. Some student inquiries did not uncover enough data due to the newness of theStanding on your own two feet earthquake event. When this occurred, the students sought representative examples to draw their own conclusions.DiscussionTo offer meaning from the student findings, I collapsed the themes into four educational lessonslearned. These are my reflections from the real-time disaster inquiries in the areas of courseinstruction, content, and student outcomes.Eureka! The instructor’s need for minimum topical content and the lack of a controlled discussion are thetwo major obstacles

weights reflecting learningobjectives. The mapping of these course learning outcomes into programoutcomes is used to obtain the degree of achievement of each student in theprogram outcomes addressed by a specific course.Evaluation of other outcomes was better suited to ABET requirements. Facultymembers were not, however, able to infer much about how the program could beimproved based on measurements alone. The measurements produced suspiciousdata. The measurements showed that the work of students was nearly uniform inquality and faculty members knew from previous experience with these studentsthat the quality of their work was clearly distinguishable.Closing the loopClosing the loop included collecting and organizing all data gathered in support

Since grades are tied to their sense of achievement, students who are performance oriented tend to feel discouraged and anxious when they earn low grades. They tend to want to memorize and pattern-match to solve problems, rather than learn the underlying concepts and methods.” (2)“Most students have been performance

teaching skillsor teaching methods. Finally, more seasoned GTAs become „Junior Colleagues‟ who considerthemselves as fellow faculty and become concerned with the impact they may have on studentlearning and engagement. Most studies on teacher concerns have employed survey methods andmost surveys were developed based on Fuller‟s[22] model. Researchers often revised andextended survey items to reflect unique needs and characteristics of diverse teacher populationsand teaching contexts. Mok[25] proposed that teacher concerns are context-specific and thereforedifferent teacher populations in varying educational contexts may evidence different teachingconcerns, which should be considered to appropriately address teaching concerns within GTAdevelopment

University. This evaluation was conducted as away to provide participant feedback to the Innovations Process faculty in order to benchmark thecourse. As a unique course funded by a USDA Higher Education Challenge grant this projectallowed the faculty of the interdisciplinary course to reflect on the first year of the project anduse feedback from the students of that year to make changes for future years.Student participants in the Innovations Process course are placed in interdisciplinary teams andchallenged to solve a real-world problem in partnership with a local (Oklahoma) sponsorcompany. The participants combine engineering, business and communications skills to developa prototype, budget analysis and a comprehensive communications plan with

Significant and lasting change: Course results in significant changes in the students, changes that continue after the course is over and even after the students have graduated. o Value in life: What the students learn has a high potential for being of value in their lives after the course is over, by enhancing their individual lives, preparing them to participate in multiple communities, or preparing them for the world of work.” (Fink, 2002)Brown and Posner (2001) state that “leadership development programs and approaches need toreach leaders at a personal and emotional level, triggering critical self-reflection, and providingsupport for meaning making including creating

often proscribed by sponsors and the possible solutions can be limited bysponsorship funding and time available. Some projects do lend themselves to greater creativity.2. Both faculty and advisory board members rated evaluation and testing lower than otherscores. In faculty discussions, it was noted that evaluation and testing are often performed in thefinal stages of a design project, so presentations in April may not reflect the final levels ofevaluation and testing performed. However, the faculty also discussed how exposure toevaluation and testing could be improved. Currently there are several courses that includeexperimental work that would develop these skills. In many of these courses, experimental workis ‘pre-designed’ to allow students

Since presumably the lab report scores in the control semesters represented thecombined effort, knowledge and skills for both members of the lab team while the lab reportscores from the solo teams reflected their individual knowledge, a comparison of these cdf'sbetween groups may be neither helpful nor necessarily meaningful. In the absence of supportingdata to the contrary, the increased lab report scores in the second control semester most likelyreflected a difference in grading scales between instructors and was not indicative of the

thesaurus was especially important because searching wasdone by subject rather than keyword, using print indexes. This was a tedious process incomparison to electronic databases which allow keyword searching of the citation, abstract, andin some cases full text. The Engineering Information Thesaurus reflects the controlled terms presently used and theprevious terms as well. When searching the online database all one needs to know is thecontrolled terms presently used; however, if one is searching the print index, then one mustfollow the indexing tool governing the respective index by year. As of January 1993, theEngineering Information Thesaurus has served as the indexing tool for the Engineering Indexand the Compendex database.2 In terms of breadth

women on the faculty and in Ph.D. graduates.Importantly, however, we do not find conclusive evidence that increasing the proportion ofwomen on the faculty at an institution has a direct relationship to the percentage of Ph.D.sgranted to women at that institution. Indeed, UC Irvine, Michigan and NMSU reflect cross-directional trends with respect to faculty and students. Specifically, Michigan performed   Proceedings of the 2010 Midwest Section Conference of the American Society for Engineering Education  12  extremely well in women faculty, landing in the top spot of their peer group
