The Research Proposal in Bioengineering Courses Roger G. Harrison, Matthias U. Nollert, David W. Schmidtke, and Vassilios I. Sikavitsas School of Chemical, Biological, and Materials Engineering Bioengineering Center University of Oklahoma Norman, OklahomaAbstractStudents in four bioengineering courses for upper-level juniors, seniors, and graduate studentswere required to write a research proposal. For these courses, the proposals ranged from a seriesof writing assignments to one writing assignment for the entire proposal. We observed thatwriting a

validity of procedures for assessing studentachievement.13While student evaluations of teaching can contribute useful information to the evaluation ofteaching performance, the literature has shown that it is not professionally responsible to relyalmost solely on SET’s for faculty evaluation.Peer Evaluation of Teaching is widely valued but appears to be rarely practiced, largely becauseof the sheer time commitment involved when multiple faculty members must be asked to visit aclass and write evaluations. Research has shown that results returned by individual peerreviewers can be highly variable and that evaluations do not correlate with teaching performanceunless multiple peer evaluators are well trained to use the same evaluation tools and

haveaddressed this problem by adding guided reading assignments to assist students in the researchprocess. The instructor specifies the initial articles, with the students eventually branching outinto their own specific research areas. For each assignment, the student writes a short report thataddresses certain aspects of each article. Using these reports, the instructor provides feedback toguide the student’s research. We have found that these assignments aid the students in theliterature review process and result in more focused research papers. In this paper, we discussthe specific procedure for creating and evaluating these assignments.IntroductionStudents who undertake graduate study in engineering will need to learn how to perform researchand

Proceedings of the 2004 American Society for Engineering Education Midwest Section ConferenceThe Second assignment is to get information on chemicals in everyday consumer products.Students are asked to investigate properties and functions of active ingredient chemicals usingreliable informative sources. In addition to chemical name, formula, structure, and properties, major uses and applications, students are asked to evaluate benefits and precautions based oninformation from reliable organizations and peer reviewed scientific journals. The third assignment is to research
