course improvement. Thispaper describes the project and its challenges.IntroductionThe Engineering Technology Department at Kansas State University is moving to more of anoutcome-based model for its degree programs. The biggest motivation behind this move comesfrom two accreditation agencies. The North Central Association provides accreditation for K-State University as a whole. In addition, most of the programs in our Engineering TechnologyDepartment are accredited by Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Boardfor Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET).1 Both of these agencies emphasis the need for astudent learning assessment plan that specifies the desired outcomes that graduates shouldachieve. Furthermore, there should be a

. Students thenlearned how to write a computer program to operate their robots.Weekly activities are noted below. Proceedings of the 2004 American Society for Engineering Education Midwest Section Conference • Created a journal to record their projects’ planning, development, programming, and testing. • Created a set of PowerPoint slides containing their groups’ information and details about their project. This activity involved designing the presentation as well as editing text and adding digital pictures. • Introduced to the LEGO Mindstorms set. This introduction was intended to give students exposure to simple machines and the RCX programming language

junior years, before theyhave decided what college to attend. The junior- and senior-level participants will be examinedfor application to the University of Tulsa, as engineering majors and particularly as chemicalengineering majors. The students will also be surveyed for future plans, specifically their chosenuniversities and majors. The effectiveness of the competition as a recruiting tool will beevaluated.IntroductionWe have taken a national collegiate competition offered by a professional society and modified itfor use at the University of Tulsa (TU) as a recruiting tool for chemical engineering. Thenational competition is the Chem-E-Car Competition sponsored by the American Institute ofChemical Engineers (AIChE). The rules of their

include the following: objectives for the period of the proposed work and expected significance, and relation to the present state of knowledge in the field. The statement should outline the general plan of work, including the broad design of activities to be undertaken and an adequate description of experimental methods and procedures. Typical section headings of the project description are as follows: Objectives, Significance, and Impact; Background; General Plan of Work; and Experimental Methods and Procedures.4. Specifications for margins, spacing and font size: 2.5 cm margins on top, bottom, and on each side; double spacing; and 12 point font size.5. Web site references should be limited to business and government web sites only

for these faculty members to share their experiences and lessons learned. This paper will also illustrate the role of online hybrid instruction as a main contributor to collaborative scholarship and address several outcomes from the collaboration, such as the fostering of mentorship, shared scholarship of teaching, and building a community of learners.IntroductionOnline instruction requires more planning, takes more time to prepare materials, and there is nostandard approach. Faculty training is key to success and “just-in-time” resources for instructors-in-training is an effective training approach. While the motivation and incentives to adopt web-based technologies for faculty are intrinsic1, the rewards can

applications of fuel cellsand to stimulate enthusiasm for engineering and technology at a crucial stage in their education.Three high schools were selected and the project began in Fall 2003. The project wassuccessfully implemented during Fall 2003 at Central High School located in Little Rock.IntroductionThe EPA’s draft on Strategic Plan (2003-08) sets out five goals—Clean Air, Clean and SafeWater, Protect and Restore the Land, Health Communities and Ecosystems, and Compliance andEnvironmental Stewardship—and describes the work they plan to do over the next 5 yearstowards achieving the set goals [1]. Community awareness of environmental issues is vital to thesuccess of such a strategic plan, and this project, as small as it is, can make a

experience that requires the application ofdesign principles learned in previous course work.Proceedings of the 2004 American Society for Engineering Education Midwest Section ConferenceSenior DesignThe Senior Design Course was introduced to the Civil Engineering curriculum in 1989 as a resultof the program self study prepared for the 1990 ABET accreditation visit. It replaced a coursecalled Senior Seminar which was dedicated to addressing professional issues in the curriculum. The original goal of Senior Design was to have students engage in a significant design project(sub-division, water treatment plant, bridge, office building, etc.) in order create a technicallycorrect design accompanied by a set of plans and specifications suitable for use as

question. The IL Group: Collaborative Curricular RenovationThe IL Group at Kansas State University-Salina College of Technology and Aviation is a groupof four: two librarians and two faculty (English and Chemistry). The Director of Libraries,Beverlee Kissick, and English professor Judy Collins met after the American Association ofHigher Education conference on assessment (June 2003) where Collins had attended apresentation by Evergreen State College on information literacy. The presenters at theconference shared their planning matrix of instructional activities involving IL, and conveyedtheir commitment to enlarging the role of IL in the "life of the curriculum”10.Kissick and Alysia Starkey at Kansas State University-Salina had launched an online

never intended that the projects be done totally during class and yet moststudents think this should be the case. They perceive the class sessions as time set aside to workon the project rather than time to meet in teams to plan and allocate the work to be done outsideof class. To combat this in future semesters, I plan to assign the project even earlier and adopteven more suggestions of Felder and Brent [2, 4], such as requiring non-binding peer ratingsearlier in the course, allowing firing and quitting of team members, having the teams regularlyassess their performance and using class time to discuss and promote effective team dynamics. The SurveysAt the end of each of three semesters, the freshman participants were surveyed to ascertain

by 2010; and 473,000 by 2015. Areas most at risk for outsourcing are those thatare not tied to the firm’s core competencies or needed to facilitate strategic planning.8 The shift to a flat or horizontal structure is primarily a response to global competition.Flattening the organizational structure streamlines management functions and shifts decision-making authority to lower levels. Synergy between former competitors is increasing as verticalintegration becomes less beneficial in modern economic structures. In the past, firms controlledthe entire production process from raw materials to marketing. However, diversification hasmade specialization on core areas, along with outsourcing a greater mechanism of efficiency. Proceedings of

, science andtechnology were unchanged, it is not clear from the surveys how students felt about thetopics beforehand. The same can be said of those 74% students who already had decidedon a course of study and the 69% for whom Botball did not influence their career choice.Botball participants are a self-selected group and may already have been planning to gointo science, math, or technology-related fields. Future surveys will seek more detailedinformation regarding pre-Botball opinions and career choices.Botball as engineering outreach From a university standpoint Botball is a wonderful thing. We have students from many different high schools in the area who, due to interest in Botball, wind up coming and doing robotics

groupsthat had purchased the information. Since none of these experiments were performed inadvance, the results were occasionally surprising but that, too, was part of the lesson.Once all experiments were completed the groups met again to summarize their data andinterpret the results. They were asked to brainstorm ways of correcting any problemsthey found (in either the testing procedure or the environmental site). The finaldeliverable was a written memorandum with a summary of their data and an oralpresentation on their results. Conclusion The response of the students was quite positive throughout the semester. It wasgratifying to walk into the classroom planning to facilitate a discussion and find that thestudents were already discussing it

playbackmessages are of random length and subject to change, the timed control loop that ispeculiar to the IFI software must be adapted to handle an external untimed event, i.e. aninterrupt. This is a sophisticated topic for an introductory programming class. The fidelityof the recorder chips is such that the gender of the person recording the feedbackmessage is easily recognized. We have boy and girl rovers!Calibration:Although the fleet of rovers have identical capabilities and sensors, each of these motorsand sensors require independent calibration. At one time, it was planned to build a sensorboard that would have calibration hardware to reduce the sensor output of the black/whitesensors to a single bit instead of an analog voltage.
