Engineering Creativity in Teaching Nanotechnology Mel I. Mendelson Mechanical Engineering Department Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, CAAbstractVarious engineering examples of micro-and nano-systems were described with applications inbiology, chemistry and electronics. Some 21st Century ethical and social dilemmas were alsopresented as case studies. Learning was assessed through pre/post-testing and student surveys.Post-testing showed ~ 200% improvement over pre-testing. Student surveys indicated thatcreating visual drawings, models and real life ethical/social issues improved their learning.IntroductionMost of the approaches

Service Learning in Engineering at Cal Poly Brian P. Self, Lynne A. Slivovsky, Kevin Taylor, and Sema Alptekin Mechanical Engineering/Computer and Electrical Engineering/Kinesiology/ Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CAIntroductionThe benefits of service learning have been demonstrated in a number of different settings(Jacoby, 1996; Tsang, 2000). By participating in projects with a community-based focus, students gain an appreciation for the role they can play in society by reflecting on a variety ofsocioeconomic and ethical implications of their experience. Cal Poly has long had a strongdesign

responsibility for the kit based upon the kit’sinventory sheet. This kit-checking process has had a couple of interesting learning aspects: Proceedings of the 2007 American Society for Engineering Education Pacific Southwest Annual Conference Copyright © 2007, American Society for Engineering Education • The teams learn self-reliance and deadlines. They associate these deadlines with real costs and outcomes. • The students understand integrity and ethical behavior. There has been several (rare) instances of discrepancies between the team kit exchange (inventory mis-matches). In all cases, there was at least one student in one team or the other who confessed that the team did not actually check the

.(7) Students have been fully exposed to professional level work. When warranted, students arenamed on patents. In 2005, Clinic sponsors filed 13 patent disclosures at the end of their projects.Other advantages at HMC include realistic practice of ethics, development of communications skills, and intensive experience in time management. None the less, teaching in Clinic remains a high riskoperation. Here are some of the issues faced by the College:-- To conserve harmony of the Clinic program with the university objectives and methods.-- To maintain academic quality of the entire engineering program.-- To retain Clinic educational control in the face of administrative pressure for funding.-- To balance student's time between formal courses and
