This paper reports on theeffect of team rules and the concomitant consequences that were developed by the students onteam functioning.Results of a multivariate analysis of variance shows that students perceived that they followedthat rules significantly more than the other members of their group, that they were assigned morework than their peers, that they completed more work that their groups members, and the qualityof their own work was higher. Project-based courses typically build in intensity, peaking in a flurry of effort shortly before the final deliverable; this intensity requires even more effort in a large interdisciplinary team. Placing the final deliverable at the end of the term (its logical place) interferes with the unique dynamics of European higher education, where the last weeks are increasingly devoted to studying for all-important final exams. method of addressing the issue of variance reduction due to group evaluation inthis type of projects course is well treated by Earle and Wood12. To determine individual gradesfrom group efforts, they use a nomograph in conjunction with (a) student assigned values ofpercent contribution for each member of their own group, and (b) an overall team grade assignedby the instructor.
