His Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering is from MIT (where he received the Exxon Fellowship and was awarded the Departmental Instructorship), and he also had post-doctoral training in the Cornell Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. He has been an R&D engineer for 20 years in areas such as power transmission equipment and paper converting equip- ment. He is the recipient of 7 patents, and co-author of an MIT

developed and used by the authors to integrate adesign project into an introductory undergraduate mechanics of materials course. The designproject discussed in-depth is a statically determinate hoist frame structure. The hoist is used tolift an object of weight. It is assembled with smooth pins and is symmetric about the two-dimensional plane. Three other design projects discussed briefly include a brace structure, beamhanger, and simple hoist structure. Lecture examples, homework problems, and design projectproblems are solved with all equations formulated symbolically. Dr. Philpot received a Ph.D. degree from Purdue University in 1992, an M.Engr. degree from Cornell University in 1980, and a B.S. from the University of Kentucky in 1979, all in Civil Engineering. Dr. Philpot teaches engineering mechan- ics and structural engineering courses at Missouri S&T. The student map shown in Figure 3 makes an attempt to show the inter-related nature of theconcepts, but also reveals this student’s confusion as well. The map possessed dramatic color (asfrom highlighter felt pens) which was not captured in the image scanning process. The studentuses words along the connecting spokes to convey additional meaning, and adds connectionsaround the perimeter, an obvious indication that he understands things are interconnected. He co-created the Integrated, First-Year Curriculum in Science, Engineering and Mathematics at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, which was recognized in 1997 with a Hesburgh Award Certificate of Excellence. He has authored or co-authored over 70 papers on engineering education in areas ranging from curricular change to faculty development. He is collaborating on NSF-supported projects for (i) renewal of the mechanics of materials course, (ii) improving preparation of students for Calculus I, (iii) systemic application of concept inventories. He is currently an ABET Program Evaluator and a Senior Associate Editor for the Journal on Engineering Education

project. Unfortunately these students have little engineeringbackground to apply to the solutions. At the other end of their college program, all ONU seniorswill complete an intensive design process as part of their year-long capstone course. Butbuilding skill and experience in the design process, item “c” of the ABET list of criticalengineering program outcomes,6 is best achieved when continually reinforced throughout thecurriculum. Thus the design project in Dynamics, a course currently taken by all engineeringstudents, provides an important bridge of continuity in the heart of the four year curriculum(typically the sophomore year) to keep the design process fresh.Project DescriptionThe Dynamics design project has taken many forms over the
