reference point for when the next time the outcomes are assessed, and (d)provide necessary and objective information to the person writing the accreditation self-studydocument. This latter point is especially important since in the case of ABET accreditedprograms, the EOCR contributes to a well-documented story on how a program is meeting itsassigned student outcomes and to what degree there is continuous improvement. The EOCR isespecially valuable for curriculum reviews since changes to the particulars of a program arebased on hard evidence as stated in the EOCR and not simply anecdotal stories.Key aspects of the EOCR process include: the instructor and interested faculty that generate theEOCR document, and the assessment tools and corresponding

background to higher education.Recently, the University of Massachusetts Lowell College of Engineering performed a reflectiveself-study, a peer evaluation, a student feedback/focus group and a student survey to determinehow to redesign the introduction to engineering sequence10. This redesign was purposefully per-formed as a student centric reflection and evaluation. The freshman year experience redesign co-incides with the appointment of a new Dean in the College of Engineering as well as with thedeployment of several ‘ maker’ initiatives, including: (1) an NSF grant to examine the impact ofHands-On Design and Manufacturing Experiences in Mechanical Engineering (Hands-OnMADE4ME: Hands On Machining, Analysis and Design Experience for Mechanical

syllabus more effective tostudent’ s learning experience. A traditional syllabus can be enhanced by describing it in a warmand friendly tone, clarifying relationship among course goals and assignments, and by specifyingrationale of assignments, to name a few. Examples of how and why these factors can make asyllabus more effective are also discussed. 2.0 Previous StudyA number of papers have been published focusing on different aspects of syllabus. pedagogies (e.g. traditional chalkboard writing, presentations, field trips, labs, etc.) to appeal to different student learning preferences and create a more inclusive learningenvironment. Utilizing the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, instructors focused on the first twodichotomies, Extroversion vs. Introversion and Sensing vs. Intuition. With an innovativeapproach towards CE Materials, the goal of stimulating independent thinkers and assistingstudents with the retention of core course material is being achieved across a range of studentlearning preferences. By teaching the course in a way that encompasses all learning preferences,a greater breadth of students can succeed in and enjoy a civil engineering curriculum.IntroductionTypical civil engineering
