responsibility in the context of an engineering graphics class. The goal ofthe project is to cement the course content and assist students early in their school career todecide if engineering is a good choice for them. The project is to reverse engineer, from ageometry perspective, a real assembly of significant complexity. The course has developed overtime to make the project very memorable and successful. Examples of projects includeinstruments, computer systems and peripherals, toys and industrial equipment (Fig. 3). This onesemester course is the student’s only formal engineering graphics training. The topics coveredinclude hand sketching, dimensioning, projections and use of the computer aided design (CAD)package to generate parts, assemblies and

versus designing careers, textbooks forCADD software, CADD taught during the college freshman year, the most effective ways ofteaching/learning CADD, challenges in teaching CADD classes, challenges for CADD users inindustry, and other similar topics. We would like to compare the responses from both academicand industrial professionals and discuss if there is any wide gap in the viewpoints from bothparties on the topics related to the CADD technology. impact on improving productsustainability, environmentally conscious design practices from the very beginning of aprofessional career will contribute to sustainability by considering global ecological factors andresources in addition to traditional functional and cost requirements. Since sustainability isbecoming a theme of whatever engineers do, it should be included from the very beginning ofthe engineering curricula. This study focuses on the sustainability features of CAD, theirrespective design phases and ways to integrate sustainability education into CAD in an existingengineering graphics course. 1.3 Sustainability and CADDesign for sustainability and the role of CAD is presented in Rama Murthy and Mani12. Draw the plastic pipe fitting in < 25 min (pre-test drawing); how to hold a pencil; draw lines of various weights; rotate paper so minimize angular deviation of the wrist; draw orthographic views of a cube (top, side, front) 2. Collect homework; review orthographic views of a cube; draw a circle with the 8-point method; draw orthographic views of a metal electrical box 3. Collect

excitement for their major-making them an ideal conduit to promote the benefits and provide advice for thechallenges that await them as they progress through their academic career.11 The upperclass students used in teaching the SolidWorks module all have industry experience usingthe software from co-op and in some cases have taken an upper level course inmanufacturing that utilizes the software. To prepare for the teaching experience, the pool of students drawn from the ASMEchapter at Northeastern University consulted with the ASME faculty advisor to reviewthe tutorial material and teaching strategies. The class is tutorial driven with a facilitatorshowing modeling steps to the students via a projection screen in a typical classroom setup with
