course in question, Structure of Materials, is an entry point intothe undergraduate curriculum in materials science and engineering (MSE) taken by mostprospective major students in the autumn of their second year of study. Being a gateway sciencecourse, it is important for students to develop a deep conceptual understanding of foundationaltopics before they embark on more advanced coursework. Structure of Materials is also taken bystudents from other departments, most notably from biomedical engineering, who can take it asan elective as part of a focused group of courses on biomaterials. contents of the hybrid curriculum was administered at the end of the semester. To facilitatethe hybrid approach, a process oriented guided inquiry learning (POGIL) materials science text book wasused in this research. In addition, class instruction included active learning activities such as in-classdemonstrations, hands-on exercises and mini- presentations by students on various topics. The post- testresults of the MCI scores was 43% showing an average gain of 7% compared to the pre- test results.Student attitudes towards the hybrid curriculum were positive and very well received. Students found in-class demonstrations as a means of learning very helpful over POGIL, in-class discussions, homeworkassignments, and mini
