techniques and software may be more effective inincreasing spatial abilities.Finding an effective approach to improve spatial ability is considered an important research andpedagogical imperative for the profession of engineering. Research by Charyton et.al., (2011)10explored the relationship between spatial visualization and creativity in engineering design tasksand found convergent validity between assessments for creativity and the Purdue SpatialVisualization Test-Rotations; this infers that improving spatial abilities may improve studentcreativity which, in turn, may help students meet today’s engineering challenges. Seminal workby Sheppard et.al., (2009)11 in Educating Engineers, Designing for the Future of the Field founddesign projects that

overbearing; however, it is very true thathumanity’s future relies on the creative mind. As educators, we look forward to inspiring, motivating, and fostering students’ creativity. Most technology and engineering students tend toquickly focus on the technical aspects of a project, and design students tend to focus on usability, quality, innovation, and the aesthetics of products [2]. In this paper, we discuss our collaborativepractice to integrate these two tendency directions and inspire creativity in the practice. As a category of the IEEE VIS conferences, the VAST (Visual Analytics Science andTechnology) challenges aim to push the forefront of visual analytics tools using benchmark datasets and establish a forum to advance visual analytics

unsure ofthe material and need help.Since the spring of 2011, this author has transformed guided, individual, final projects towardsteam-based open-ended final projects. The students now have an opportunity to apply the skillsand knowledge they learned in the class to solve real-world problems, and to think as engineers. This has introduced a greater level of excitement and enthusiasm into the course by allowingstudents to explore the topics of personal interest and has enhanced their understanding of theconcepts learned in the classroom 11. Since the majority of the students are freshmen, they do notknow each other before this course and typically do not have any social links yet. To betterenhance the performance of the teamwork, there is a need

View3. Siemens providestwo solutions for visually analyzing the product during its design process. The first one is NXthat uses HD3D Visual Reporting from metadata to help designers understand design issues. With different color-coded tags and “see-through” settings, users can see the inside componentsof 3D models and comprehend data quickly4. With the integration of product views and 2Dsnapshots, Teamcenter’s lifecycle visualization can send CAD data to the stand-alone applicationviewer or the Lifecycle Viewer to provide a complete view of the whole assembly5.Almost all these projects use spreadsheets, basic information diagrams, and tree widgets todisplay the product information. However, very few existing PLM systems adopt

by the original rubric 6, had mixed results when examining relationships with measuresin the course (e.g., final project and final exam). Some of these studies also examined whetherstudents’ modeling ability was related to their spatial visualization ability 4, 5, 7. There werepositive correlations between the PSVT:R and the modeling test (not all were significant) andsignificant positive correlations between the MCT and the modeling test. Recommendationsincluded repeating the study using a shorter modeling activity, examining a more efficient wayof evaluating the models, and using qualitative methods for evaluating modeling strategies.Research QuestionsThe current study was designed to conduct a preliminary investigation into using an

an introductory graphic communications course in engineering design graphics. Additionally, this study investigated the spatial ability relationship between novice and experienced spatiallearners as measured by the three spatial ability tests. For the purpose of this study, a novicelearner has not received any job related training (such as co-op) or taken any courses in graphicsrelated subjects that dealt with orthographic and pictorial projection by either sketching ordrawing via manual or computer generation. An experienced learner has received at least somelimited job related training or taken at least one secondary or post secondary course on graphicsrelated subjects.MethodologyThe research methodology for this study comprised four steps
