basic instrumentation systems, including both analog anddigital aspects. The laboratory component focuses on the development of a microcontroller-based instrumentation system that can provide readings to a PC and an onboard LCD fromswitches, accelerometers and load cells. The course is heavily-focused on hands-on work in the laboratory. From student feedback in2009 and 2010 it became apparent that there was a mismatch between the theoretical backgroundprovided in class and the practical work being undertaken in the laboratory. This is reflective of Page 24.739.3the general approach taken in Engineering classes. Engineering instructors are

Electric Circuit problems and their interest level was alsoincreased which resulted in better retention in the course. The name MATLAB stands forMATrix LABoratory. MATLAB was written originally to provide easy access to matrix softwaredeveloped by the LINPACK (linear system package) and EISPACK (Eigen system package)projects. MATLAB is computational in nature which provides conceptual approach for designingand solving problems in Electrical Circuits. MATLAB has embedded software calledSIMULINK which provides an essential way to model, simulate and analyze Electrical Systemswhich are characterized by some inputs and outputs. This paper will discuss the summerundergraduate research training project in which the students tested the basic electrical

and Computer Engineering Technology program complete a3-credit Measurements & Instrumentation course. There are three main sections of the course: (1)Programming applications using LabVIEW, (2) Data acquisition, sensors, and signal conditioning, and (3) Design of measurement systems. Weekly laboratory activities mirror the lecture materials.Part of the requirements in the course includes an end-of-semester team design project where onepossible option is to design and implement software application for the Finch Robot. Students areprovided LabVIEW SubVIs for all of the robot’s low-level functions (audio buzzer, tri-color LED,left/right motor control, light sensors, obstacle detectors, temperature sensor, and tri-axisaccelerometer values) as
