by a team of five graduate studentinstructors enrolled in PhD programs in civil engineering at Purdue.Pre-college engineering programs have been integral to the engineering pipeline for decades.Many student participates in these programs have gone on to become successful engineeringstudents including underrepresented students [2], [3]. needed to solve problems. Competitions provide an avenue to learnmany other ‘soft skills’ that are not the focus in most engineering curricula [16, 17, 9]. Inaddition, competition projects provide intrinsic benefits such as an increased sense of belongingand community, increased sense of self-efficacy and accomplishment, broadening participationof underrepresented groups (particularly women), increased self-drive, and improvedmanagement skills [18]. ” environment in engineering classrooms, much of which wasrelated to student-faculty interaction. Several studies through the 1990s and early 2000sevaluated the retention issues in engineering as related to interactions and experiences in theclassroom [9] [10]. Most students reported the learning environment as a significant reason forleaving engineering disciplines [11]. Findings from Vogt’s [12] research linked poor facultyinteractions to low retention rates among engineering students. Additionally, the study concludedthat negative experiences with faculty significantly impacted students' self-efficacy andconfidence. The results of negative rapport are consistently shown to be severe and should beconsidered detrimental to classroom engagement and
