whether to work alone or in self-selected groups for the course projects; and (2)allowing students the option of how to communicate their knowledge on the projects (writtenreport, website, or recorded video). The quality of the students’ knowledge about sustainabilityas revealed through the projects was highly uneven, and on average weaker than their scores onthe more traditional technical portions of the project. It is hoped that the examples and lessonslearned will help others integrate sustainability topics into materials science courses. However, itappears difficult to instill a sociotechnical mindset and overcome the engineering culture whichpreferences technical topics.IntroductionIt is important that engineers work to create products and

complete a design project. Buildingon our previously reported work, this paper investigates students’ reported ability and self-efficacy as it relates to a design framework and mindset in a restructured materials designcapstone course. In AY 2022-23, a two-semester capstone sequence was piloted to improve thestudents’ design experience via a fundamental restructuring of the course elements, replacing thetraditional, one-semester course. In AY 2023-24, the two-semester sequence was formalized inthe course catalog with over 50 students taking the two-course sequence. In this restructuring, two frameworks were integrated in the course content: Human-CenteredDesign (HCD) framework, a method to formalize the design process in discrete stages, and

shapeproject constraints and user needs [2]. In other cases, the aim is to help students approach designin the context of ethics or sustainability, with an eye toward the long-term impacts of their workacross a range of users and circumstances [3]. Immersive classroom experiences like design-build-test assignments and community engagement projects can help facilitate this kind ofknowledge [3-5]. Lab classes are good candidates for doing this kind of work, given the alreadyhands-on nature of a typical materials science lab course. One area where the lab class has yet toexcel, however, is in preparing students to communicate meaningfully about their work acrossdiverse audiences and situations. In this paper, we argue that strategic focus on

subscription. Relevant alternatives include the paid software PollEverywhere [12] and free option Kialo Edu [13]. One can also repurpose existing more familiartools such as anonymous discussion boards on a learning management system (Canvas andBlackboard both have this capability) by setting the discussion to be only open briefly duringclass, and reviewing the results with the class as they come in.Using TopHat or similar software, an instructor is able to assign a discussion and project a livefeed with anonymized student responses (which can include text and, optionally, digitalsketches), while student submissions are still saved elsewhere in the system with their namesattached. The saved data could be used, for instance, to later address any

properties [3], [4]. In thepast, efforts have been made to integrate the PSPP framework into lab courses effectively. Some notable approaches to these integrations include assigning students open-ended projects[5], [6], integrating programming modules and computational modeling with the physicallabs [7], [8], and bringing industry speakers for guest lectures [9]. These multiple approachesto designing MSEN lab courses highlight the continuous efforts to improve the labexperience for engineering students. However, another noteworthy aspect is to focus ondeveloping students' ability to communicate the findings from the lab work to a generalaudience.Laboratory writing is not only a task for documenting experiments but has also been used as apedagogical

materials. This town has also made itself known for forward-thinkingactivities within domestic infrastructure, such as biogas city buses [1], extensive renewabledistrict heating [2] and production technology [3], as well as higher education. It is a medium-sized Swedish town with links to this industrial history that makes it a main local provider ofgraduated Engineering students. That was also one reason for the online professionaldevelopment course program that was created by this University as an Industry-Academycollaboration, within the ExSus project (EXpert Competence for SUStainable Production).Since the Aerospace and Transport industry are some of the main local stakeholders, it wasnatural to include a strong focus on relevant, so called

challenging [10-11]. Students need multiple opportunities to practice and applyconcepts at an introductory and intermediate level before they can begin to think like an expert. In turn, instructors and departments must scaffold both their individual courses and theircurriculum as a whole for students to achieve these higher-order learning outcomes.Implementing open-ended experiments and projects also requires extensive preparation andtroubleshooting and may not always be scalable. Instructors and departments often have tobalance authentic approaches with practical limitations. In this work, I present a framework for incorporating higher-order learning outcomes into thematerials science and engineering undergraduate curriculum through a single

The ability for students to learn and perform an end-to-end data science workflow without writing a single line of code, all within the context ofmaterials design, has the potential to enhance their educational experience and improve theiremployability in a rapidly advancing field. The Citrine Platform has been used to help expose second- and third-year undergraduateMS&E students to AI and ML through an iterative activity that involves development andcuration of a material and process property dataset of 3D printed plastics [25]. The process isshown in Figure 8. Students began by collecting and organizing plastic filament data frompublished literature and from an existing dataset provided by the instructor. The output ofthis

Therehave been calls to integrate computational modeling, and the perspective of emergence ithighlights, across K-16 STEM curricula in general [28], [29] and specifically to make “one-to-many” computational models the backbone of the MSE curriculum [15]. However, prior work oncomputational restructurations have only designed learning interventions for specific topicswithin a subject. The course redesign reported in this paper is the first time that a project rootedin restructuration theory has taken on the task of redesigning an entire course.2.3 Prior workIn [1], we described the course redesign in detail, including conceptual explanations of
